I just went out on a limb and ordered their 7" split with some other band. Hell, it wasn't a very large limb since it was only $4. Should be worth it.

your joking. Britian is pretty much america's 51st state and the two countries share more in common culturally then you seem to think. Both are pretty much run by the media, societies are told what to do via over-exposure and unfortunatly music is part of that. In britian at the moment you either have foppy punk revivalist bands trying their best to emulate the libertines, indie-pop groups churning out as many singles as possible to make money, so-called 'big' bands releasing sh!t albums or terrible metalcore bands. All the decent british bands arent given the time of the day because at the end of the day, they dont have mass appeal thus they'll make less money for the industry. my mum and dad chose the wrong time to concieve me.

The British media has a much bigger hype machine than we do when it comes to music. That's why every year they have a new band that they obsess over and act like their album is going to be the second coming of christ in disc form (Arctic Monkeys Etc...) and most of these bands end of being average at best.

to be fair i think i think the arctic monkeys are on of the better 'hyped' bands we've had in recent years. What you say is very true, over here the media seem so desperate for a new golden age in british music they'll hype anything with a couple of catchy singles, a good image and semi-decent ability.

Yeah...I like what I heard from Arctic Monkeys. They were just the first band that sprung to mind, because they were one of the most recent I guess. Still, I don't think they, or any other British band of late deserves the ridiculously high level of praise they get.

The problem with the British media is it`s 'build them up , knock them down' mentality.
As soon as something comes along they hype it up to be the best thing of all time ever , and then a year or so later they won`t give it the time of day.
I remember in 1999 when you couldn`t move for Gay Dad being hyped to high heaven in every single British magazine going Or say in 2001 with The Music .By the time their second albums came out both bands were virtually anonymous.
I think thats why there are hardly any British bands getting any success in the U.S. at the moment. They`re just not given time to build anything before they`re dropped and forgotten about.

I've never been to America, so I can't comment on all the differences and similarities between the cultures. For some reason, British bands are always intent on 'breaking America.' I don't understand this, as American bands never seem to have to 'break britain', we just accept them and take them in.

Also, I only know of two magazines in Britain (musiclly). And the critics tend to side with the masses. The critics in the states rarely like anything popular unless it came out 30 years ago (back when they bashed it, yeah im looking at you rolling stone), therefore the critics are regarded as just another opinion here.

On top of that, whats super popular where I live isn't super popular in diffrent parts of the country. America is a strange sort of place to begin with culturally but the fact that you can ID a state by either being a "blues" state or a "jazz" state says more than enough about the music that comes in here.

NME magasine is a bloody odd one. A couple of weeks ago, they were ranting and raving about how good Towers Of London were. Now, they can't stop referring to them as a 'shit band.' We don't have much in the way of music magasines over here in the UK.

music journalism is an immensly fickle business and editors have a huge influence over the content written by writers. bands will one week be saviours and the next sinners, its the same everwhere.
