Pink Floyd was hardly prog.

If you heard their entire catelog you would think otherwise.

DSOTM had many prog elements, though the songs are shorter than most prog songs but Camel and other bands usualy write short songs as well.

Wish You Were Here and Animals are extremely prog, more complex parts, longer compositions, very experiemental instrumentals and diverse themes.

Pink Floyd were very prog during the 68-71 period...Ummagumma, Obscured By Clouds and Atom Heart Mother are their early progressive albums, and Piper At The Gates Of Dawn and Saucerful Of Secrets had a good deal of influence on many progressive rock bands, Yes noted SOS as one of the main influences on their album Relayer, which is also regarded as one of their best, ELP and Gentle Giant had influences from Floyd as well.

The only Floyd albums that are really lacking of any real prog rock elements would include The Wall (though i still consider The Trial a very prog song) and Momentary Lapse Of Reason, which was more of a Floyd-lite pop album.

Musicians who use instruments for non musical purposes, basicly emphasizing on showing off ones technical chops over working on a melodic theme, usualy resulting in unbearable racket and noise thats great for driving away termites, examples.

I've heard their entire catalogue (and a plenitude of unreleased material) many, many times. They were more experimental/psychedelic rock than anything in the early years. Having an influence on progressive bands doesn't make Floyd a progressive band themselves. Of course there were a few (moderately negligible, in my opinion) elements of prog in their music, but if I had to choose one subgenre to represent the Floyd, I'd choose experimental rock.

Mentioning Pink Floyd in a thread with "Crap Musicians" in the title is making me want to vomit. :)

I suppose it once was. All the modern 'progressive rock' bands I've been hearing about are scantily experimental. They seem to be a little too preoccupied with instrumental wankery to even contemplate composing something innovational.

Well, i think there are some progressive rock bands around today who can be truely experiemental, and others who choose not to because they are too busy wanking their asse's off.

Thats the primary reason i dont consider DT to be in the same league as other modern progressive bands like Ozric Tentacles, Porcupine Tree, Sigur Ros, Mr Bungle, Primus, Radiohead, The Mars Volta, Super Furry Animals, Muse, 4/3 De Trio, Godspeed You Black Emperor!, Alon, Anekdoten, Cabezas De Cera, Secret Machines, Chain, Mastodon, Mogwai, Coheed & Cambria, Explosions In The Sky, Frameshift, Flaming Lips, Morte Macabre, Spocks Beard, New Machine, Oysterhead, Nimbus, Pineapple Thief, Psicotropia, Amplifier, Chroma Key, Hidria Spacefolk, The Verve, Negative Zone, No-Man, Oceansize or even Tool...Those bands are actualy being progressive, and their albums dont all sound the same.

Most DT fans who consider them one of the greatest prog bands ever havent really heard much progressive rock, then or now....At first glimpse DT may seem original, then compare them to all the great and imaginative progressive rock bands out today, including those i mentioned, and they are pretty much a dried up piece of poop.

I agree totally, though maybe in a different approach.

To me progressive doesn't just refer to the music you play, but also to how much you look to change the music being played. In lamens terms, experimenting with the overall sound, in order to progress the world of music as we know it. Progressive is an ever changing definition, or should I say, nothing is set in stone. The Mars Volta are a great example of this, they've created their own unique prog sound.
