ALL-TIME Top 5 USA Bands vs. Top 5 British Bands

This is for all-time, not currently, not just in the 90's. I had to balance out my list based on influences as both a musician and a typically mindless listener.... (ahhhh, pretty noises)...

Britain
1. Pink Floyd
2. Led Zeppelin
3. Beatles
4. Jethro Tull
5. David Bowie

USA
1. Neil Young
2. Jimi Hendrix
3. Fishbone
4. Nirvana
5. Sublime

As a listener only my list would be slightly different, but that's more or less it. So what's on your list?

Urban Hat€monger ? 03-21-2006 11:32 AM

UK - Beatles , Stones , Bowie , Pistols , Smiths

US - Robert Johnson , Elvis , Dylan , Hendrix , Pixies

Given what I said about roots music in the other thread I think the US is better represented by solo artists

ShOwTiM3 03-21-2006 02:13 PM

Britain
-Pink Floyd
-Led Zeppelin
-Beatles
-Rolling Stones
-David Bowie

USA
-Neil Young
-Jimi Hendrix
-Bob Dylan
-Nirvana
-??? I Can't come up with a name..

Muzak 03-21-2006 02:37 PM

Sublime is far from great IMO, I would say either Elvis Presly or the Pixies should be on the list.

Robert Johnson was an interesting choice. I'd have to agree. Solo performers in the states tend to be much stronger and more independant. You just don't get that sort of vibe overseas.

I'm wondering if showtime copied my list and just changed a few names or was it that similar to begin with...

Muzak, I was trying to think of bands that influence my muzak and to say that Elvis was an influence is kind of like saying that Adam and Eve influenced my birth. Also to generate responses like these. It's easy to throw out big names. It's hard to sit down and seriously think this through. Just ask showtime.... I'd be interested to see your list though and in order of importance.

Well , with no Robert Johnson there would be no Rolling Stones , no Led Zep (Just to name 2 , probably all the British guitarist of the 60s also) ,and without just those 2 bands the whole face of music would be very very different.

Muzak 03-21-2006 03:47 PM

Oh whoops, I thought it was a universal list. Didn't mean to insult your personal list. :( I'm sorry. I thought Elvis presley was very influential though I don't really like him.
In my mind my list would be:
U.K
Dragonforce
Led Zeppelin
The Specials
Black Sabbath
Bad Manners

USA
Jimi Hendrix
Nine Inch Nails
The Pixies
???
???

Ma Cherie 03-21-2006 04:12 PM

Britain
-Pink Floyd
-Led Zeppelin
-Beatles
-Rolling Stones
-AC/DC

USA
-Neil Young
-Jimi Hendrix
-Bob Dylan
-Nirvana
-Temptations

IamAlejo 03-21-2006 04:21 PM

Bands alone?
US: Metallica, Pearl Jam, Beach Boys, The Ramones, Lynyrd Skynrd

Brit: Pink Floyd, Led Zep, Rolling Stones, Beatles, The Sex Pistols

I think the Brit bands are much, much more influential. I like the US bands more though.

adidasss 03-21-2006 04:23 PM

correct me if i'm wrong, but ac/dc is australian no?

Urban Hat€monger ? 03-21-2006 04:26 PM

Technically

Although at one point they had 4 members born in Britain

Ma Cherie 03-21-2006 04:32 PM

assuming that most band generally come from Britan as well i asumed, so don't fuss to much at me...

DontRunMeOver 03-21-2006 04:42 PM

US –
Rage Against the Machine
Smashing Pumpkins
Incubus
Jeff Buckley
Head Automatica (Based on one album. A fickle, but earnest opinion.)

UK -
Muse
Radiohead
Blur (ex-britpopper, what can I say!)
Led Zepellin
David Bowie. He’s a band.

Actually Little Richard was the first person to make the transition from blues to rock. Blues-rock bands like Led Zep are less primitive to me and much more tasteful but their roots are not quite as close to home as the days of Elvis and such.

I would say technically it shouldn't count since their origins were are distinctly aussie - not to complain or anything.

Crowe 03-24-2006 03:14 AM

What a funny thread! Are we talking about our all time favorites? The most influential bands? The bands with the biggest followings? Most records sold? Most talent?

The word "Top" implies many things!

Ac/Dc is Australian. Wiki that to double check my facts.

Crashing Sun 03-24-2006 08:37 AM

My list is a mix of all-time favorite bands and influences on my music. You could do that or either or.

Incidentally, I need to correct/update my list:

Britain
1. Pink Floyd
2. Led Zeppelin
3. Beatles
4. Jethro Tull
5. Peter Gabriel (+ any pre-Collins as singer Genesis)

USA
1. Neil Young
2. Jimi Hendrix
3. Fishbone
4. Nirvana
5. Tom Waits

Apologies to David Bowie and to the late/great Bradley Nowell and all his bong-toking friends.

cardboard adolescent 03-24-2006 08:49 AM

Britain

My Bloody Valentine
Black Sabbath
Joy Division
Bauhaus
Magazine

US

Slint
The Mothers (of Invention)
Husker Du
Tool
The Doors

That's my list for maybe the next five minutes.

coffeeshop 03-25-2006 05:10 AM

UK- Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden, Radiohead, The Stone Roses
US- Alice in Chains, Sonic Youth, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Metallica, The Velvet Underground

boo boo 03-25-2006 01:05 PM

By the decades.

60s

Brits - The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, The Who, Cream.

Yanks - Jimi Hendrix (still a UK act so to speak), Bob Dylan, The Grateful Dead, The Velvet Underground, James Brown.

70s

Brits - Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, David Bowie, Black Sabbath, The Sex Pistols.

Yanks - Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Ramones, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Parliament/Funkadelic.

80s

Brits - The Smiths, The Cure, The Clash, Joy Division, Iron Maiden.

Yanks - Sonic Youth, Pixies, The Minutemen, Husker Du, Talking Heads.

90s

Brits - Radiohead, My Bloody Valentine, Oasis, Massive Attack, PJ Harvey.

Yanks - Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam, Beck, Red Hot Chili Peppers.

But when going by all time.

Brits - The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, The Who, The Clash

Yanks - Elvis, Bob Dylan, Chuck Berry, Bruce Springsteen, Jimi Hendrix.

However, im been the topic of just "rock music" this whole time, and i think the brits take us in that category...If we are including all genres, then the US scores a lot of points for Miles Davis, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, John Coltrane, T Monk...Etc.

Crowe 03-25-2006 02:16 PM

You know- I've been poring over both of these threads, I have yet to see a couple of KEY bands/individuals mentioned very much or at all!...

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.
I've only seen Bob Dylan mentioned a couple times... though that could be just me missing it.
Fleetwood Mac.

Joe Walsh.
Allman Brothers.
James Taylor.
Simon and Garfunkel.
Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band.
Queen.
Guns N Roses.
Sly and the Family Stone.
Michael Jackson.
Billy Joel.
Prince.
Otis Redding.
The Zombies (thought the brits would be all over this band!)
Paul Simon.
Buddy Holly.
Creedence Clearwater Revival! (How'd we miss this Statesiders?)
Frank Sinatra.
Cream. (Hello US?)
The Yardbirds.
The Byrds.
Janis ****ing Joplin.
The Mamas and the Papas.
B.B. King.
Crosby, Stills, Nash...
Jefferson Airplane (NOT STARSHIP)
The Pretenders
The Beastie Boys.
Kiss.
T. Rex.
Abba.
Aerosmith.
Green Day. (As much as you might hate them, they are extremely influential - a lot of bands credit them with providing influence... I'll provide a list if need be)
Clapton's solo career.
Nine Inch Nails.
Bo Diddley.
Pavement.
The Kinks.
Madonna.
The Mothers of Invention.
Jerry Lee Lewis. ( How could we forget this when we mentioned Elvis - the entire Sun Records 1950's line up is the stuff of epic legends.)
The Jesus and Mary Chain. (although they are scottish...)
The Cars.
The Police.
Motor City 5 haven't been getting any ****ing respect.
Weezer.
Jane's Addiction.
No Doubt. (Talk about bringing ska to the forefront... Gwen is a damn joke now, though)
The Cure.
Jethro Tull.
Depeche Mode.
Meat Loaf.

I'll post more later, I have to go get my hairs cut!

DontRunMeOver 03-25-2006 03:53 PM

Well, I guess it means that they didn't make it into people's top 5's then.

Looking at the list, I am shocked that Queen haven't been mentioned though. They can go on my list. Kick um, Led Zeppelin off and replace them with Queen (that's right). Don't tell any Brummies I said that.

Cheese 03-25-2006 04:09 PM

The Band are Canadian and ABBA are from Sweden, so neither belong in this discussion.

Fleetwood Mac are a international band, half of their members are british, and half are american.

Yeah but they turned from a decent blues rock band to a horrible soft rock band when the Americans got involved.

You guys are all fuc.king up.....Neil Young is not an american...hes Canadian...and dont steal him Bitches

Crowe 03-25-2006 05:08 PM

I know I'm just saying... that in these versus threads + greatest <enter what here> threads... some of these bands have just been left off... and most of them don't deserve it... those were just off the top of my head, I tried thinking of both UK and US bands so as not to be one-sided, I just happen to know more US...

I will agree with you on this one. But it really depends on what you like, I guess. I don't think they were HORRIBLE though, but try and tell that to your fellow limey's who kept Rumours on the UK Chart listings for 450 WEEKS and helped it to become the 6th Best Selling Album of ALL TIME. Give credit where it's due, even if you don't like it. Nicks, Fleetwood, Buckingham, and McVie rocked the socks off of the world.

Holy ****, he IS! Oh come on, let us steal him.. you get Nelly Furtado, Celine Dion, Sum 41, Simple Plan, Rush, The Guess Who, The Tragically Hip, the Crash Test Dummies (snicker), Alanis Morisette, Avril Lavigne, and that bitch Anne Murray, too! See, you have some diamonds in the rough. We'll trade you Paul Simon for Neil Young.

I can do lots of things.

I can admit that U2 made 3 great songs
I can admit that I think Michael Jacksons first album was a work of genius
I can admit that I dance drunkenly to Ricky Martin songs in nightclubs with the local totty.
Hell I can even admit that a couple of Pearl Jam songs are listenable

But give Rumours one iota of credit?

Never EVER gonna happen

He's right (and they need all the good musicians they can get)... so I'm going to have to update Neil Young with Bob Dylan.. love his contribution and all but I'm not sure he was that direct of an influence on my music. So it's more like appreciation than anything else.

UK
1. Pink Floyd
2. Led Zeppelin
3. Beatles
4. Jethro Tull
5. Peter Gabriel (solo + him singing for Genesis but not when he came back to them)

USA
1. Bob Dylan
2. Jimi Hendrix
3. Fishbone
4. Nirvana
5. Tom Waits

Canada
1. Neil Young
2. Rush
3. (Hmmm)
4. ...
5. ....

To finish off your Canadian list...3.The Guess Who / BTO
4.The band
5.Chilliwack

I would not put those 3 on my list but I wonder what Canadians think of "Death From Above 1979"... Any other Canadian candidates?

Arcade Fire, New Pornographers, Alanis Morrisette, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Broken Social Scene, Matthew Good, Hot Hot Heat, April Wine and Steppenwolf.

On the other hand Canada should pay for Nickelback, Avril Lavigne, Celine Dion, Bryan Adams, Simple Plan, Crash Test Dummies, Default and Three Days Grace.
