Starter Kit

In honor of right-track's quest to educate people about northern soul, I am starting this thread with the intention of pointing people on the right track.

The idea is to choose a genre you enjoy, and post a list of songs for the beginner to listen to. A starting point of exploration into new fields of music. For instance, I have heard a lot about this emo stuff. Perhaps I'll take 10 songs and put them on a cd and listen for a while, see if it grows, and maybe I will expand.

Anyway, I'll start off with Big Band music.

Take the A-Train
Opus One
In the Mood
Jivin' the Vibes
One O'clock Boogie
Begin the Beguine
Sing Sing Sing
Kalamazoo
String of Pearls
Pennsylvania 6-5000

There are plenty more, but there's 10 for a start.

mosesandtherubberducky 04-17-2006 03:27 PM

Jr. could you make a .rar file and upload it to YSI? I've been meaning to listen to some Big Band but I don't know where to begin.

jr. 04-17-2006 03:28 PM

I've no idea what that is. LOL.

Understandable, if you have them all on you computer could you go to ftp://mosesandtherubberducky.myftp.org and at the login promp use the name/pass imagiver/notastealer and drag and drop those songs into the upload folder. If you get an error or something then don't bother just for the sake that it could be due to a number of reasons and I can always bum them off of Ethan.

Since I love this style of heavy, bass drenched, psychedelica music I figured I'd deal a few picks for you. This isn't a definitive 'best ever' list, I'm just trying to give a decent range of artists. You need good quality speakers for this music to be at it's best!

Stoner Rock(R)/Metal(M)

1. Monster Magnet - Powertrip (R)
2. Kyuss - Demon Cleaner (R)
3. Queens Of The Strone Age - Go With The Flow (R)
4. Orange Goblin - Blue Snow (M)
5. High On Fire - 10,000 Years (M)
6. Cathedral - Utopian Blaster (M)
7. Electric Wizard - Supercoven (M)
8. Clutch - Whisky & Rye (R)
9. Sleep - Dragonaut (M)
10. Unida - Thorn (R)

I'm uploading this compilation for all, so give me a couple hours and I'll update this post with a link to click.

Isn't that song by Harry Chapin?
Perhaps Cat Stevens did a cover or the original and I just didn't know...

I like this band. Probably because they took alot of their sound from Wire.

You're going to start people who don't listen to folk with Woody Guthrie? If the production doesn't put them off, then his voice will. Look my list was created so that people who were into vastly diffrent music could have an easy time getting in. I didn't create it so you could dive headlong into the snobbery conversations, and furthermore, I put Bruce's version of the song on there because they get the general idea without having to get by superficial hold-ups.

In this regard, I think my list is very good. Next time maybe more Ashlee Simpson.

And bungalo, yeah im pretty sure he covered it. But covers aren't off the mark here, I mean as i've already said, Springsteen is covering Guthrie. its less aout artists and more about the actual music.

hiu 04-19-2006 10:38 PM

Ashlee Simpson isn't a folk artist TheBig3KilledMyRainDog.

TheBig3 04-19-2006 10:41 PM

well it depends what vocal track shes lip-syching to, but would you say with my original intention it was a good list?

hiu 04-19-2006 10:48 PM

Yes, it's pretty good. Maybe the addition of some bands like Against Me or similar bands in that folk punk vein.

TheBig3 04-19-2006 10:54 PM

Well right, I'd love to have added more. But alas, the world has only so long to live.

Yes, it's also called the One Oclock Jump. It just happens that the cd I have calls it the Boogie, so that's what I wrote.
