personally, i love him.

He has the voice of a man who has felt more than any other man, yet every other man - whether he has or not is irrelevant - He is a unique soul.

Lord, I love this man. His career is so eclectic, ranging from smooth ballads to his alcohol-soaked vocals on later albums. I love him, and I need to listen to more of his discography.

Any recommended albums?

Rain Dogs is probably my favorite, but Bone Machine, Mule Variations, Black Rider, Blue Valentine and Frank's Wild Years are all great too. He really hasn't made a bad album, though his stuff from the 70s is a bit more conventional sounding.

Nice. I don't have those last four. And I really enjoy his conventional sound too. Closing Time is great.

Out of the ones I mentioned Blue Valentine is in his older, more conventional style but sort of an artsier take on it if that makes sense.

Ooo, I just remembered another one I can't believe I left off the list: Small Change. It fits squarely into his 70s style, but damn is it a great album with some of his best lyrics and a couple of his most gut-wrenching songs.

Best Waits movie (sorry if this has been run through already)?

I'm voting either Down By Law or Wristcutters.

Default Tom Waits

Not sure which forum I should put this in, Waits being so hard to pigeonhole and all...
Going to put together a few compos, for anyone who would like to get into Waits but is scared off by his more "out-there" stuff. Going to do an intro list, a more in-depth and perhaps some "advanced" ones. Should I post details of that here, in the psychedlic/prog forum, the general music one? Or where?
Any ideas??

OK, the question has been answered by the removal of my thread and appending it to this one. Fair enough.
I think though I'm actually going to start a full new thread, where I'll post links to compos for other artistes too, not just Waits, so people can try before they buy, as it were. Might get some of you into the delights of Supertramp, Genesis, Marillion, Asia -- hey, even Josh Groban or Faith Hill! Who knows?
Anyone think this is a good/bad idea?
Well, I'm gonna do it anyway!
Watch for it...

PS Best Waits album, imo? "Small change" or else "Rain dogs", but you have to hear (if you haven't already) his collaboration with Crystal ***le on the soundtrack to the movie "One from the heart", espcially "Broken bicycles" and "Picking up after you"....

That's so stupid it's damn funny! Stupid robots! Hopefully you all know who I mean, with the removal of the "G" word making her surname illegible. She sang "Don't it make my brown eyes blue" --- country singer, good looker. You know the one!
Oh, when will the hell of this PC-world-gone-mad end????
