The thing with Tom is that he makes really beautiful songs in an ugly way. That makes the song stand out strong!

On the way home from our show today, all my friends were hungover and miserable in the back of the bus, so I put on Rain Dogs, and in a matter of a few songs, a lot of them were asking, "Who is this?". Seeing as how many of these kids had never heard of him and some of them just listen to mainstream rap and the like, I was gladly amused when they had they realized the perfection of the atmosphere of that album. Perfect for riding home on the interstate while nursing a hangover.

The Heart Of A Saturday Night is the perfect hangover album. Both Rain Dogs and Blue Valentine are the 'upon drunken reflection' albums.

Blue Valentine happens to strike fear in the heart of Satan. I don't know this for a fact, I've just seen it happen before.

Any thoughts on the new live album? Haven't got it yet but the setlist looks lovely enough (Goin' Out West, fuck yeah!)...

It's great. Get Behind the Mule sounds excellent. Tom's voice is even more raw and dirty on the live album than I've ever heard.

I haven't picked it up yet because I think I have a bootleged version from the tour.

Will 2010 bring a new studio album from Tom Waits? Quite possibly.

Tom Waits hasn't got a clue what shape his next album will take, but he reveals he's begun writing for his first new studio collection since 2006's acclaimed “Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers & Bastards,” a three-disc set that also included some older rare tracks. A new album could be arriving later in 2010, though he insists, “Anything I would tell you right now, I would just be making it up.

“We may record sometime in the spring,” he says by phone from his home in Sonoma County. “You're never sure how long it will take. You write two songs and you put them in a room together and they have offspring.”

I've heard a lot of people mention Bob Dylan as their favorite lyricist.
Tom Waits would be above Dylan in my top ten favorite lyricist list.
