I suppose we shall have to disagree on this forever... I think "Tears I Heaven" is the most soulful piece of music ever written, but I realise that I'd be wrong to claim Clapton was always better than Allman (although NO-ONE can syncopate like Clapton... )

And thanks for bringing up Blind Lemon Jefferson, I shall try and find some more of his stuff. It's exactly the kind of music I like.

i said "most of his stuff" not "all"

i like Tears in Heaven myself, it revives that gentle soft rock vibe of Bread's If or Rod Stewart's I Don't Wanna Talk About It

Well, his greatly cherished four year old son fell off a balcony and died. I think that his pain at his loss comes through beautifully.

And also, playing it on the guitar isn't as easy as it sounds. It was one of the first blues pieces I ever learned, and it really got me into playing the blues. I love it to this day.

it isn't really "blues" - blues are usually I,IV and V chords with 12 bars

it's more a soft rock ballad with jazz leanings

i learnt it as well

Frankly, I'm getting tired of seeing these type of comments... Stop with them because they just make you look condescending and unable to back up your argument.

Hey, he was saying that Eric Clapton was making "blues easy listening", and therefore he wasn't "pure". Which I wasn't comfortable with. I don't mind Il Duce saying that, he's a nice guy and I didn't mean it seriously....

I thought everyone would be able to see that I don't really have that kind of sarcastic attitude, if I did, I'd probably be completely insufferable. I'm not using it as an "argument", I just wanted to comment on the fact that just because loads of people like a given artist, it doesn't make him bad.

Clapton really had the blues, nobody can deny that. Tears in Heaven is a beautiful piece.

This is my favorite version of Layla. I just learned it the other day. Not that hard to play, took me a about a day to get it down, but it sounds really good. Does anyone have any idea what scale he's using? it doesn't sound like it's just a straight blues scale. I feel like it's mixed with a mode, maybe the Dorian? I'm not sure.

Wasn't that the version that appeared on the "Unplugged" album? I've got that very same recording and according to iTunes, I've listened to it 339 times.

And yes, I can play the Derek and the Dominos version, which isn't too hard, but it really sounds amazing.

Ya it's off the unplugged album. I just love that acoustic soloing he does in the song.
