Most people who casually listen to music can't even pick out the bass line in a song. Rhythm guitar parts change a lot and aren't as defined as solos for the most part. I agree that Bass and Rhythm guitar players are just as important as lead, if not more so, but your average listener will probably better enjoy the solos and main riffs. It doesn't mean they're overrated, it just means that the average listener doesn't appreciate all aspects of a song.
