Jimi Hendrix was not really a technically brilliant guitar player, but he definitely had the most talent and i still think he is the best ever. Also, he had only been making music with the hendrix experience for 4 years before he died at the age of 28, so no one has any idea of what kind of new stuff he could have come up with and how much better he could have been.

What? No love for Thurston Moore or Lee Ranaldo?

A lot of people are doing this all wrong. Saying Jimi Hendrix isn't a great guitarist because a lot of modern guitarists can play his material is like saying Ernest Hemingway isn't a great author because a lot of modern authors can use bigger words than he did. If you're judging guitarists simply based on their ability to play notes quickly, you have at best a rudimentary idea of what art truly is.

I always thought the best musicians are ones you've never heard of...so I honestly can't say... but as far as the ones I have heard, I would have to say Kirk Hammett. He can let loose just as fast as dimebag could, and he has the ability to solo over your mom. Amen.
