They found their singer at Midevil Times (a place here in southern california where you can go watch real life jousting, full armor and all, and feast on birds) And they have who I believe is a very underrated guitar player named Michael Romeo. The whole band rips but they dont get enough credit.
they actually get tons of credit and recognition within the style of music they play. it's just not the kind of stuff that gets mainstream appeal, but you'll have a hard time finding anyone with half a clue about shredding who's never heard of the group.

DT is like the modern King Crimson where a collection of virtuosos managed to capture the attention of the fringe of the mainstream early and strong enough to maintain a long term presence, as such they're that band in the eyes of many, many people who have little to no interest in finding anyone to replace that niche in the spectrum of music they're accustomed to.

Dragonforce is hardly a worthwhile example of anything besides being a Guitar Hero one hit wonder.

Oh good god no. King Crimson wasn't based solely on technical precision.

obviously not, but you're also not considering them from the perspective of the mainstream. it was the easiest comparison to make.

basically those people with a clue know that there's more to Crimson than technical ability, regardless of the fact that the mainstream sees them as noodle-y virtuosos.

same as the people with a clue know that there's little more to DT than technical ability, regardless of the fact that their niche fans want to see them as more than noodle-y virtuosos.

seems to me there's always 1 current active group like that, where they border that grey area between the edge of the mainstream and the obscurity of virtuosity. at the moment (and for the last decade or so) DT seems to be it.

Thanks for clearing that up. It's an interesting point that you make.

I'd have to say The Mars Volta, they are a great prog-rock band and "De-Loused in the Comatorium" is a very awesome conceptual album!

Check out "Goliath" of their album "The Bedlam in Goliath," 8 minutes of pure bliss!

I don't doubt their intrinsic awesomeness, and they're one band I really should get into more... but I don't think they're underrated at all. If anything, I think they're quite higthly thought of, at least on these boards, anyways...
