I remember the first Sonic Youth song i heard, it was Unmade Bed, and i thought to myself "holy crap, this band is damn horrible, dreadful dreadful music."

Then i heard Candle, which i loved so much i got Daydream Nation, i fell in love with them from that point, i even like Unmade Bed now.

In short, Sonic Youth take some time to appreciate for some people.

You need to pick up the right album too.

I`d say at least 60% of Sonic Youths output is unlistenable crap.

I don't agree. 40% may be easier to get into but a large section of the rest you need to get into. For example Confusion is Sex, which is not very easy to listen to but there's some brilliant tracks on it. I do agree though they have made some rubbish, but it has been largely surpassed by the awesome material.

Pumpkins take this one easily for me, i've been an SP fan for a long time and that is my favorite album by them.

I don't really listen to either, but I hate the pumpkins so I'll go with sonic.

I really like Bad Moon Rising, its the later records like A Thousand Leaves and Murray Street you need to watch out for.
