It's been put back to September while the label (same as Gnarls Barkley's) discuss the possibility.

Pop music, the concept, hasn't changed. As several people in this thread have already stated, and rightly so, it's catchy and light and appeals to the masses. Hence the name, Popular Music.

Pop music, the product, is vastly different now. In it's inception pop music was based on music. Pop music now, for the most part, is image and industry driven. If a person 'looks' like they can sell records, if their voice is passable, (and sometimes even not), they're marketed on a massive scale.

The whole idea of good looks/borderline talent isn't anything new. This has been going on all the way back to the 50's. Ricky Nelson, Neil Sedaka, Frankie Avalon, Fabian, etc, were all good looking guys, with voices that were okay, but they certainly weren't in the same league as Elvis, and before him, Frank Sinatra.

I will say this...it does seem that the talent level is at an all time low when it comes to pop music. I'm no authority because I rarely listen to it. It seems if anyone gains a bit of notariety these days, for whatever reason, people want to put a microphone in their hand and see if they can sell records. But, from what I hear, it all sound like one long song to me.

Of course, my 11 year old daughter would say the same about my music, as well.

What I want to know is why you (Hui) spend so much time flaunting your love for pop music. Great, you like it, but enough of your attempts to make yourself feel superior with your "open mindedness."

I'm still of the opinion that if you hear one Shakira song you've heard them all, and quite frankly I don't care enough to set out to prove myself wrong. I'd much rather listen to Double Nickels on the Dime again.

Well, I will say that I love Shakira.
Other than that, I never listen to the radio, so I am not really exposed to all the radio singles that everyone says are so overplayed. For example, I still have not heard Dani California. I just never listen to the radio. Well, the MB Last.fm radio is the exception ;]

Theres too kinds of pop.. The kind thats good and requires some talent, like The Beatles, The Who, The Kinks, David Bowie, The Smiths, Brian Ferry, Todd Rundgren, Elton John, Michael Jackson, Peter Gabriel, etc... and of course the kind of repetitive, talent-free crap that everyone eats up, make it into their ringtone and in a week say "i can't believe i liked this crappy song"... Check New Kids On The Block, NSYNC*, Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears, Ricky Martin, Jessica Simpson, Smash Mouth, The Killers, Franz Ferdinand, Hillary Duff, etc.
