Omar Rodriguez Lopez Quartet - Sepulcros De Miel

It is available for free (or rather, name your price) here. I haven't heard his last few, as he puts out too much stuff and it's hard to keep up, plus they can be pretty wanky.

One reviewer on RYM says, "Very reminiscent of early The Mars Volta albums. Highly recommended for fans of De-Loused in the Comatorium, Frances the Mute, or psychedelic music in general." That's enough for me.

Nice, I'm only familiar with his very early solo stuff tbh. I quite like Cyborg from 1973 but it is undoubtedly a challenging listen with its 100 mins of minimalist, eerie, cold and unforgiving dronescapes.

it gets a lot less experimental as the years go on. his newer stuff is really quite good judging from the little i've been able to check out since yesterday. more melodic, more modern...

so far though, my favorite has to be Body Love, an ambient porno soundtrack from 1977. now if i could only track down the actual video... :D

More melodic and modern is what came to mind when I watched that Mephisto video. And I had no idea he wrote a soundtrack for a porno - that's hilarious

It's interesting that you didn't start out with Solid Air. It's a wonderful album and definitely my favourite ever folk release. I love this verse from Don't Want to Know:

Yes, it's getting hard to listen
Hard for us to use our eyes
'Cause all around the gold is glistening
Making sure it keeps us hypnotised

As for Saxon, they're a bit dated and cheesy but if you don't mind that and you like NWOBHM then Wheels of Steel will be right up your alley. I still need to hear the new Deftones.

Yeah im pretty sure i know what to expect from Saxon. Maybe nothing id fall in love with but they could be fun live. I dont think i would pay to go a gig of theirs so if theres no other band on at the same time that i really wanna see then ill probably use that opportunity to check them out. I would like to have heard a little more before i do that. If i like the compilation, i might well check out that album.

And as far as John Martyn goes, i started at the beginning. I usually do. I never got past the first two albums.

Such a great album. The Colbert bump really does work.

Mojo 06-02-2010 09:37 AM

I just gave it a listen. I dont like to judge albums upon their first spin but I enjoyed it. Presumably it can be classed, above all else, as a folk record but it was quite poppy in places too. It was a pleasant enough album to listen to for sure.
