Elucid - Police and Thieves

Checking out Elucid's solo stuff after digging Armand Hammer's latest album so much.

Willie Colón & Rubén Blades—Siembra (1978)
I have such mixed feelings about this album. It's considered to be one of the greatest salsa albums ever made and was, when it came out, the best selling salsa album of all time. So you can see it has quite a pedigree. It's also considered to be "the thinking man's salsa" because of Rubén Blades lyrics, but unfortunately my spanish is only good enough to vaguely understand the content of the lyrics and I really can't tell if they're well written or not. As a result I can only judge by the music, which is good, but doesn't exactly blow my socks off. The funny part is the first track starts off sounding like it's going to be seriously the greatest disco song of all time before being interrupted by a salsa beat that, while enjoyable, is honestly a little disappointing in the face of the badass disco that immediately preceded it. Unfortunately, I feel like the rest of the alum never reaches the heights of that first 45 seconds.

I say all of this, I guess, because I'm curious if other people feel the same way about the intro to this album that I do. What do you think? Does the disco intro kick the salsa's ass or no? Here's the song:

Yeah I really like it. It's definitely different from the stuff I usually listen to. Although, then again, there's no limit to what I listen to. I'm all over the damn place.

I always assumed that you were named after them. :) I love them, awesome progressive/post rock, reminds me of The Sounds of Animals Fighting if they were an actual band instead of a tape trading project.

Haha no i wasnt named after them. I have to wonder if they named themselves after the pokemon.. But i think it your sig was the reason I found them. I saw "Ninetails - Pedestrian" and was like wtf are you listing MB members.

But ya they were pretty cool. Really dug their second EP alot. Gonna have to keep my eye on them they seem like they could put out a great full length album.

Pretty damn good so far, not sure why I hadn't heard of Clinic before. It's almost like a more twisted version of an elephant 6 collective band.

Held Above by Hollow Sunshine

Super fuzzy, shoegazey, droning pop that wouldn't have sounded out of place in the 90s. Excellent album

23 Skidoo - Urban Gamelan (1984)

Digging into my vinyl collection and renewing my love for one of my favorite bands from the 80's. This was the album that got me into this band, and the first track "F.U.G.I." with samples from Francis Ford Coppola's "Apocalypse Now" was the song that got me hooked.
Mostly an instrumental album featuring bass, guitar, horns, drums & percussion, with some vocal samples added to some of the tunes. The album starts out with an instrumental funk groove (F.U.G.I.) and then goes into dub before getting progressively drum & percussion oriented with bass, guitar, horns and vocal samples giving way to tribal style drum patterns giving way to gamelan style patterns until only the percussion instruments remain.
