A very difficult album. This is going to be hard to get into; I have a feeling it's going to be very rewarding in the end though. :D

that cd rocks hard, i LOVE the flaming lips

They really did rock on Conan O'Brien the other night.

^ There's actually a pretty interesting story behind this album, Bergsman lived in Pakistan for a few months to record, and had some wild experiences, there's an article in Under The Radar that goes into all the 'cultural misunderstandings' she went through along with the making of the album. For all you indie f4gs there's also a sweet Animal Collective cover entitled 'My Boys'.

Lunar Dunes - "From Above"

Killer bass and drum grooves with floaty psych-guitar over the top. Very chill. I've played it about 6 times in two days.

Julian Casablancas - Phrazes For the Young (2009)

This baby just leaked at 96kbps (which is only suitable for a preliminary evaluation, really).
Beats the pants off the last dodgy Strokes album and is a million miles away stylistically - an ambitious synth-pop album with epic track lengths (of which there are only 8 in total).
This rich kid's workrate leaves a lot to be desired, but the man can surely craft a choon.

Now all that's left is 'Raditude' and I'm set.

Really liking this album, just as dark as some of Jay Munly's solo albums, I think this may be my next write up in my Gothic Country thread.

The Crystal Method - Divided by the Night

Pretty generic indie electro, a few nice moments like the song with the dudette from Metric but overall not brilliant.

Katatonia - Night Is The New Day

New album, I thought it was coming out this week, but apparently I was wrong. I also thought the new CunninLyguists album was coming out today, but that's on Friday for some reason. Really I'm just killing time 'till next week for the new Gift of Gab album :D

edit: After giving Night is the New Day two listens I have to say that I'm pretty unimpressed with it unfortunately. It sounds far too tame and safe from their previous material. I mean it's a perfectly good album the same way a cracker is a perfectly edible snack, however it leaves you crying out for something more like a nice piece of brie. Uninspired is the best word I can think of to describe this album, which is unfortunate because I was actually pretty excited for it :(

Newbie out:

First listen didn't blow me away and there are a couple of slow numbers on there. On second listen I decided to crank it a lot more and it sounded a lot better but doesn't seem as good as their last Christ Illusion. However saying that, they still blow the ass out of many newer bands after 25 years of recording.

i just listened to 'Reign In Blood' (my only Slayer album, on CD-R) twice through, never get sick of that album, maybe it's time to move on...

there's a new Megadeth album too incidentally which it is hard to get excited about for some reason

jackhammer 10-27-2009 05:12 PM

The new Megadeth album is bloody great but then I am biased but it is very solid! checkout Christ Illusion to see how Slayer sound these days. Still tight as a pair of leather pants.

that's all the confirmation i need! How does the 'deth one compare to United Abominations? (You may save your answer for Tore's newly-opened Megadeth thread :p:)

I can't speak for the quality, I haven't listened to any of their albums since Vegas.

Very nice ones. How do you like them? Ghost Reveries isn't the best I've heard from Opeth, but it could be the intro song that has thrown me off. The woman's voice is beautiful and it blends well with the album, but something seems amiss. Perhaps it's Lopez ...

Quality might just be my favorite Kweli album. This of course doesn't count any albums he's recorded with others. The Blackstar album was pretty brilliant and his work with Madlib is worth checking out, too.

I'm sure a few of you might disagree with me, but in my opinion it's his best release yet...No Good For No One Now was extremely good but I listen to New Leaves on repeat all the way through and think it has stronger songs overall.
