Kikagaku Moyo - Live at Levitation (2021)

Quote:

The Reverberation Appreciation Society is proud to launch a brand new live series, Live at LEVITATION. Recorded over the history of the world-renowned event, the series captures key moments in psychedelic rock history, and live music in Austin, Texas. The artists and sets showcased here have been chosen from over a decade of recordings, and captures key artists in the scene performing for a crowd of their peers and fans who gather at Levitation annually from all over the world.

- - -

The first LP in this series features Japanese psych heavyweights Kikagaku Moyo. This particular record is as strong sonically as it is meaningful in the band’s history. It showcases one of the band’s very first US shows in 2014 on the A-side, and their triumphant return in 2019 on the B-side with them firing on all cylinders amid a sold out US tour.

“Playing Austin Psych Fest / Levitation was always a goal from our earliest days of the band - to join the psychedelic community for a weekend of music and present our live performance. This show in 2014 was a landmark for us. To return years later in 2019 and find the same welcome, the dream was still very much alive and well.”
- Kikagaku Moyo

The sound quality seems to be lacking a bit in spots. Good overall sound but could definitely be better. Good performances by the band, though. Most of their fans will probably dig it.

Oh yeah!! (Marie, I sometimes think we were sisters in a past life.)

I think ISB once called In A Silent Way an "album that stops time". An apt description.

I'm extra grateful for a dear friend in town who spotted a Lemon Jelly release at a local indie record shop this week. It's exceedingly rare that one of their releases surfaces which is not already a part of my collection, and even rarer still that an item appears outside of the duo's native UK, so this news was a magnificent surprise! I'm so happy he thought of me!

The event seemed worthy of re-staging my collection photo of their works and related titles. It made for a fun afternoon!

Wild Pink - A Billion Little Lights

Based on this Pitchfork review (which gave it a whopping 7.6), it was supposed to be a cross between War on drugs and Death cab for cutie. Bored me to tears. Undistinguishable from a billion other bedroom lo-fi indie projects from 20 years ago. Nice album cover though.

Fuga Di Luce by Vittorio Marino

I have recently discovered that a Creel Pool discography file was re-upped as well as a separate host containing almost 1500 library music albums. This is very exciting for me, as i live for this kind of shit.

It will take me a lifetime to comb through it all, but a commonality between the two lists is this one so i tried it first. It's a very pleasant, subtle bit of swaying synth. Some parts remind me of Cluster ("Gioco Per Bambini Gioiosi"). Very up my alley

Jimmy "Duck" Holmes - Cypress Grove (2019)

Quote:

72-year-old bluesman Jimmy “Duck” Holmes’ new album, the Dan Auerbach produced Cypress Grove, captures the raw, explosive sound of real Mississippi Juke-Joint Blues today. Cypress Grove is an aural postcard of a typical Saturday night at Holmes’ Blue Front Café, America’s longest operating juke joint. The album is anchored by tradition — which is natural, since Holmes is the last of the original torchbearers of the rural style known as Bentonia blues—but it’s also explosive, raw, and unpredictably in the moment.

Just discovered a early 70s group prog folk called Comus.Been listening to 'First Utterance' 1971,the last couple of days. It's definitely an acquired taste but lots of great flute and female harmonies in there.Original vinyl goes for almost £1000 as does a lot of late 60s/early70s prog/folk stuff.

This is a great album. Kind of doom, a bit psychedelic

Attachment 6693

Another good album I came across. Original, cerebral, not as heavy as some other stuff. But really good.

Attachment 6694

New release by Chevelle. A bit poppy, but I like it. Unique rhythms and great melodies.

Currently listening to the collaboration, Promises, between Floating Points, Pharoah Sanders, and the London Symphony Orchestra. I'm currently listening to movement 7 and its absolutely lush and beautiful.

Wow, what a suite. Haven't heard Sanders this lush since his mid 80's outing Shukuru. Early AOTY contender.

Papir - Jams (2021)

Quote:

"Jamming has always been an essential part of Papir. Jamming in the rehearsal room, jamming in the studio, collectively jamming live and getting in to a common zone of rocking outbursts, ambient soundscapes, repetitive trances or whatever comes through. Sometimes it can just feel like a hard work of even trying to get into the zone. But mostly it's just good times and fun, and I guess that's why we do it. It's all about musical energy!
