Cool, I am huge fan of Steely Dan. Pretzel Logic is, along with their debut album, the most pop oriented imo. Aja is however the one I rate highest.

But they'll do for now :)

Yeah, I've heard many a good word about that one too. It's weird though - I heard a few of their songs years back and thought they were absolute crap. I've been digging just about everything Sylvian did after Japan split like ditches lately, so it's about time I gave them a real chance.

i just grabbed the soundtracks from all of Tarantino's films. there is some really good music in these. lots of cheese, but lots of gold too. the cool thing is they all fit together quite well - makes for an awesome shuffle playlist :D

Jim Strange and the Proud and the Damned - I Like This World...

This EP was sent to me by Jim Strange himself, a Portland Oregon based musician who had been following my Gothic Country blog for awhile and wanted me to do a review for him. He has a few connections so I may be doing some promotional work pro bono for the time being and getting some free music along the way :D

Rishloo - Eidolon (2007)

An intriguing independent release I picked up recently; kind of like a Tool being fronted by a more versatile vocalist. Its one of those rare albums with a strong grasp of both the loud and the quiet, and I like that in my metal.

Have A Nice Life - Deathconciousness (2008)

Lo-fi shoegaze with lots of space, sparse electronic fog and folk touches throughout. Spellbinding.

Univers Zero - Clivages (2010)

Been quite awhile since this impeccable outfit has released a studio album, and all in all I'd place this as one of their strongest albums since Heresie from the late 70's. It's quite lighthearted as far as R.I.O. goes, but the rich instrumentation and memorable grooves make this a major highlight of the year for me so far.

Pretty cool that it's the 50th in this amazing series. Also exciting because Instra:Mental is a master of minimal/atomospheric DnB. :thumb:

They're still as captivating as ever but I don't know... It's more of an observation than a complaint when I think about it. If you've heard her EP see if you can understand what I'm saying.

Fantastic choice. The ambient/drone pieces are top notch.

You know I've tried really hard to like that album, but no matter how hard I tried I couldn't convince myself that I wasn't just listening to a mediocre Tool rip off. I kept the album because it really does compliment a Tool mix, but I very rarely listen to it on its own and never bothered to look up anything else by those guys. It also is a good choice if you're driving with people who like metal, but not extreme metal, and want to listen to something other than the usual suspects in alternative metal.

I also downloaded that Have A Nice Life album because your description of it seemed to resonate very well with a writing project I'm working on right now, I'll get back to you with my thoughts on it after I can give it a proper spin.

I've been on an "Ambient" binge lately. Usually though, straight up Ambient can be a bit monotonous. I'm not sure if that will be the case this time around.. I guess I'll find out!

Just got my hands on Hot Chips new offering 'One Night Stand' and what a fine dance record it is. I know it's a it late but I also just got my hands on Death Cab's 'Plans' album. what a cracking piece of musicianship it is.

Was looking for some stuff to relax too recently, and picked up these 2 by the Shanghai Chinese Traditional Orchestra:

http://www.acumedic.com/externaltemp...ix/mus-tor.jpg
http://www.acumedic.com/externaltemp...ix/mus-pho.jpg

They're part of a 5 piece set, which also includes; Tiger, Serpent, and Dragon. Tortoise is 'water', and Phoenix is 'fire', so I guess it's sorta like Cpt. Planet? 0_0
Anyway, I've only listened to Tortoise so far, but it does it's job of relaxing very well, and brings to mind all sorts of streams, rivers, rainfall, etc. Phoenix is next up.
If I end up liking these enough after awhile I'll probably end up end up grabbing the other three too. It's actually recommended that you listen to all 5 in a row to achieve complete relaxation..or something. :)

Seltzer 02-10-2010 01:39 AM

Ever since I heard that CCCP track on an MB compilation ages ago (one made by streetwaves if memory serves), I've been wanting to check out these guys. Haven't had a chance to give it a listen yet.

I think I'll go hunting for some more James Brown now.

I have to say that is probably the ugliest album cover I've ever seen but it has piqued my interest. What does it sound like?

Meshuggah - Alive

eeee a live album by Meshuggah!!! just what I need for the drive to school today. And next week, Finntroll drop their newest album, 2010 is shaping to be a good year for metal.

The last one I bought was "Atomhenge 76" by Hawkwind.
I got it for $6 at a record/CD show. A good deal for a double CD.
