Supersuckers - Get The Hell

first album of 2014 and it arrived a day early

what can i say.....if you like Supersuckers you'll like this album.....pure satanic rock....once again they prove that the Supersuckers are indeed the greatest rock n roll band in the world

and they do a great cover of Depeche Mode's "Never Let Me Down Again"

Inside Llewyn Davis Soundtrack

i went to go see this with a friend yesterday....first time for him and second for me

during my first view i obviously noticed the songs....but they really had little effect on me

this second viewing was the exact opposite....all i could think about were the songs....and two in particular....so bad that i had to buy a copy of the soundtrack at the nearest Barnes and Nobles!

^That entire post makes me happy.

Stonehelm - Stonehelm

This is pretty good Stoner/Doom metal. Stonehelm have only made one album, it seems. Shame, I would of liked to hear more.

Hmm. Maybe I'll check this out.

Own this baby on plastic.

Listened to that this week too, for the first time in a long time. It was long overdue.

BLUES PILLS - DEVIL MAN (2013)
Second EP of Swedish blues. Female singer, with a very strong, powerful voice. Some may say the album overindulges in its vocal power, but I think it hits the spot when I'm in the right mood.

THIS IS YOUR CAPTAIN SPEAKING - ETERNAL RETURN (2008)
Their first album Storyboard has one of my favourite post-rock records for years, yet for some reason I still hadn't checked out anything else by them. First listen...underwhelmed. Offers little to separate it from the pack of extremely similar, unoriginal post-rock records. But I may give it another go.

A couple of Swans albums; Love Of Life and Soundtracks for the Blind. They haven't arrived yet, but I'm really looking forward to them.

As you should. Love of Life is one of the greatest albums in the history of everything.

Not to talk it up or anything.

My first batch of 2014 albums.

http://images.music-story.com/img/al...st-shelter.jpg

Alcest - Shelter (2014)
I have now come to accept that Alcest's best material is truly behind them. This isn't a bad album as such, and I probably like it more than Le Voyages de l'Âme, but it still sounds a bit bland and uninspiring. It's far mellower overall than any of their previous output, think the lighter, prettier moments of Souvenirs d'un Autre Monde only just not as good. Even some guest vocals from Neil Halstead of Slowdive/Mojave 3 is not enough to save this from being average.

https://eu.rymimg.com/lk/f/l/1df3777...78/5050915.jpg

September Girls - Cursing the Sea (2014)
Oh goody, an all-female indie pop/noise pop quintet from Dublin signed to Fortuna Pop!, the same label that gave us The Pains of Being Pure at Heart and Allo Darlin'. Sadly though this is as dull and painfully generic as indie pop gets. Even when they do have something good going it's swept under by the horribly bassy production. This actually makes me want to dig out a Vivian Girls album instead.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...aint_album.jpg

Warpaint - Warpaint (2014)
This is a bit more like it. Firstly this strikes me as an album that will take a few listens to really get to like. But even on first listen I picked out some things that really interested me, such as the dark, almost trip-hop vibes that are present on some of the songs. It sounds wonderful, the bass and drums are well produced, even if some of the songs don't stick out on first listen. But I'm sure this is an album I'll be digging in the next week or so.

Some very good contemporary Americana/ folk.

Jill Tracy - Diabolical Streak (1998)

Amazing find, it's basically the album Nick Cave would write if he was a woman and did cabaret and jazz. There's some really wickedly dark lyrics on this album about death and jealousy, I mean there's a song called "Pulling Your Insides Out" but the melody totally distracts you from the lyrics so you just bob your head along enjoying it without really thinking about what's going on in the song.

Charlemagne 01-21-2014 11:31 PM

I literally just got all 3 of these.

Against Me! - Transgender Dysphoria Blues
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi..._cover_art.jpg

This album is phenomenal, especially lyrically. It's just so emotional and powerful. Really excited about this one.

Hiss Golden Messenger - Bad Debt
http://cdn2.thelineofbestfit.com/med...r-Bad-Debt.jpg

This album is really barren, but in a great way. It's soft, but haunting, just a guitar and foot tapping, definitely reminds me of The Creek Drank The Cradle which is one of my favorite albums.

Dave Hause - Devour
http://coretexrecords.com/bilder/pro...use-devour.jpg

I haven't decided if I like this better than Resolutions but man "Autism Vaccine Blues" is a great song.

The Cog Is Dead - Steam Powered Stories (2010)

Pretty surprised by this one, I was kind of expecting a Dr. Steel knockoff but it's absolutely nothing like that. It's similar in many ways to Ween's underrated country album 12 Golden Country Greats but at times it's also like They Might Be Giants with a steampunk gimmick. Honestly though it's not even really a gimmick either, it's more of a motif. So yeah if you're looking for a comedic album with country, polka, folk, rock, and operatic elements, this is definitely one for you.

Gorgeous folky album that sounds like a mash up of Pentangle, early Fairport Convention, Gorkys Zygotic Mynci & Kings Of Convenience.

Highly recommended.

I guess I just always look at the same two or three websites and it's pretty hard to get the most obscure bands from those places.

But yeah I'd appreciate a link for sure!

I was in the mood for a piano driven cabaret album and I've never been a big fan of some of the bigger acts like The Dresden Dolls or Amanda Palmer. This was just more my style I guess, could have used a bit more variation and I don't think the songs needed to be that long, but still a pretty enjoyable album.

Very interesting experimental noisy hip hop that predates Death Grips (not this album but B L A C K I E's first album). Only on the second track and I think this guy's style is great.

Howling songs is the best album of that period IMO, and yeah he almost always make his tracks too long.

Unfortunately, I just got this. I was all like "New Soft Moon, ALRIGHT!" Then I heard the song, I'm so pissed. I think I might wait to sell it as it's super limited and I will get a good portion of my money back. Seriously, what is it with the bands in this scene faltering so badly? APTBS, Soft Moon, what next? I blame bands like DIIV for corrupting the scene with their baggy clothes and hipster shite attitude.

WaffleFlamesisAngry 01-25-2014 05:11 PM

I just bought The Sticks by Mother Mother. It's really epic alt rock, definitely check out Bit by Bit.
