Favorite '80s band?

I just got the new Pure 80s #1s compilation and hearing "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" for the first time in a while has me pulling out all of my old Tears for Fears, Cure, Duran Duran, etc. What was your favorite band in the 80s?

judas_priest 06-06-2006 01:07 PM

There were loads of brilliant bands, but my favourite has to be Megadeth.

White Lies 06-06-2006 02:40 PM

There were loads of great bands in the 80s. My favorite is either Black Flag or the Minutemen.

You started well. It went badly downhill after Black Flag though.

rkingpin 06-09-2006 06:25 PM

Piss Me Off 06-10-2006 01:57 AM

The Smiths and The Cure
And Sonic Youth.

=ladyface= 10-09-2007 01:59 PM

The Human League are my favourites but I have a lot of love for Tears For Fears and Level 42. :p:

I've noticed that people my age don't seem to take Tears For Fears seriously because they were around at the same time as bands like Wham! and the like... but they're perfectly happy to take Joy Division seriously. :p: Poor Tears For Fears.

sleepy jack 10-09-2007 02:01 PM

The Smiths, though i've been really liking Joy Division lately.

Please tell me you didn't just compare Tears For Fears with Joy Division. Thats like saying Shed 7 were just as good as Radiohead.

=ladyface= 10-09-2007 02:08 PM

I'm not comparing them directly but they were amazing songwriters and people seem to remember them for Mad World and nothing else and they associate them with the massive pop acts of the time. When it comes to Joy Division they take them seriously before they've heard more than Love Will Tear Us Apart.

anticipation 10-09-2007 04:39 PM

Spinal Tap was pretty good.

stakeraiser 10-09-2007 05:03 PM

Smiths, Pogues

dragster 10-09-2007 07:57 PM

If we're talking NON wimpy music: The Knack, Blondie, The Shirts, Bangles...

=ladyface= 10-10-2007 10:46 AM

I never thought I'd hear 'non-wimpy' and 'The Bangles' in the same sentence. :p:

sleepy jack 10-10-2007 05:12 PM

and the Knack...I always considered them one of the definitive bad 80s bands.

jackhammer 10-10-2007 05:30 PM

The knack were only memorable for the immortal MY SHARONA. I like Tears For Fears myself. They never set the world alight but they made good solid pop music.

Prefab Sprout
Spear Of Destiny
were good bands.

Sparky 10-10-2007 05:33 PM

talking heads
the smiths
the replacements
psychedelic furs

jackhammer 10-10-2007 05:36 PM

Talking heads are classed as a 70's band (debut 77) but good choices.

ART OF NOISE
PROPOGANDA

Both signed to ZTT (Trevor Horn) done some great experimental stuff in the 80's.
