Agora by Fennesz

This should’ve been on my 2019 list. Fans of Boris and Sunn0))) might like this. Unless you’re a loser.

Unassailable

I’ve been finding myself disappounted with cryo chamber label releases for a while now. I need some kind of innovation. Thoughts welcome.

Did you hear Nicolas Jaar's Cenizas yet? Hasn't quite connected with me yet (haven't given it much time tbf) but it's a pretty singular approach to ambient whose only reference point I can nail down is that it's influenced by some of the ideas that Arca was playing with on her s/t.

And while it's not necessarily ambient or drone, death industrial acts a la Puce Mary might scratch the same itch that dark ambient does for you. You can always catch up on what KK Null is doing too.

I’m happy about the Jaar release but haven’t yet.

Think I’m current on Puce Mary and yeah KK Null - sure there’s some nugs there I haven’t heard.

Not that those aren’t great suggestions and I wasn’t clear but what I meant was are there any cryo chamber releases that I’m over looking.

I checked out Dead Melodies and Zenjungle collaboration anthropocene, and because it involves traditional instruments and bowed guitar I thought it would hit the spot but instead I was thinking it still seems trapped in that dark ambient formula - that’s fine - it’s a good formula but I’m ... well like I thought the instruments could be showcased a little more - maybe that defeats the objective. There’s plenty out there but this label might be too restrictive. On one hand I like that the listener gets what they expect but on the other hand I don’t like that it’s ALWAYS what you expect.

Ah, I thought you were looking for general dark ambient recs. I get what you mean about genre traps, I feel like a good deal of post-Macintosh Plus artists who self-identify as vaporwave just mimic the form without adding anything new to it or they do it in a way that misunderstands/overlooks the irony/charm.

Have you ever listened to Drunken Forest by Death Ambient? It's not as ambient as the band name might suggest but it still kinda is and that album is really special and beautiful.

Beacons by C.Diab

Highest recommendations. Should appeal to anyone who like Disintegration Loops. One of my favorite drone artists and a top something guitarist of the past decade.
