i generally dont like them, except for the bob dylan one, because im not going to buy 60 or so dylan albums. in fact dylan even has a few different greatest hits cds. other than that, no.

The Counting Crows GHD did a nice job of collecting things that weren't mainstream hits but were still great songs as well as offering unreleased covers as incentive for those who owned everything.

There are some good ones out there.

That really bothers me when they attach unreleased songs to greatest hits or release bonus tracks to albums I already I have.

Good lord, what doesn't bother you?

Why does that bother you that they throw on songs that they aren't going to put anywhere else on GHD?

Because I'm sure that there's more than just one song that they haven't released and, they could make a compilation of unreleased songs so, that when I spend my money I actually buy stuff I don't have instead of stuff that I do. I don't mind them releasing the tracks I just don't want to spend my money twice.

Alright well in the case I cited, they were cover songs, so I don't think they had plans to do it other than to offer some incentive like "hey not only do you get what we consider our finest work, but you also get some songs we wish we had written"

I don't see the problem with them. I see a problem with a band who has loads of greatest hits albums (The Smiths) but I think it's a good way to break you into a band, with songs that you know, then let you look for other stuff. I've bought the greatest hits of a few bands now, and then from that I dug out other stuff. Albums are better of course, cos like you say the experience and all that, but I think that releasing a greatest hits album isn't a bad thing. If you do it at the right time.

^ Agreed, thats pretty much my opinion on them. Greatest Hits are a good introduction to a band.

i really liked the Smashing Pumpkins greatest hits cd. i guess it depends on the band and what all they put on the cd, so i cant really say i hate all or like all greatest hits cds.

It depends, some bands you know that you wouldn't like a full studio album by but others you wonder whether their career is worthy of a greatest hits?
