Pixies - Surfa Rosa, then I saw them live.

My father gave me classic-rock influences even at the age of three. He and I would sit down in front of the tape machine and listen to The Who, Jackson Browne, Bruce Springsteen, U2, The Band, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Eric Clapton, Simon and Garfunkel, CCR, etc.

As I grew, I kept that influence but as a 7-9 year old, I listened to pop like Smash Mouth or Lenny Kravitz.

I eventually got into "alt-rock" at age 10-12 (Big Wreck, Pearl Jam, Our Lady Peace), before revisiting my classic-rock roots from age 13-14, getting into the Stones, Floyd, Zeppelin, The Clash, Poison, GnR etc. Age 15 I got into the whole post-punk/"new wave revival" stuff like The Killers, Interpol, The Bravery, etc. Then it became overdone, overplayed (Killers especially, so I tired of it). Age 16-17(now) I got more into hip-hop. Initially bought some Public Enemy, Wu-Tang, The Roots, Atmosphere.

So yeah, I guess classic rock is in my veins, but my music style's changed quite a bit.

I like to listen to mostly indie stuff because I'm a bit elitist in the sense that I hate listening to the same stuff the ignorant, slutty 14 year old down the street listens to. I like being more unique. But I still don't force myself to listen to certain stuff to fit a trend. I like what I like, and just cause I say I like hip-hop doesn't mean I can't like The Raconteurs.

So there you have it.

My uncle provided with most of what i listened as a kid.
So from what he got me listening to: dead kennedy's, love & rockets, pink floyd, the clash, the ramones, social D, bob dylan, styx, deep purple, pantera and that's about it really.

Over the years though, I get influenced a lot by two of my bestest friends in the world and the people in my band

My piano teacher and my friends Colin and Mark. Everybody in my family listens to extremely bad music, as does my girlfriend generally.

My cousin listened to a lot of Rage against the machine, beastie boys, alternative and hip-hop, so that probably started off the kinda music i like.

It's hereditary then. ;)

My elder sister by 5 years has had a strong influence on my music tastes.
Particularly for Soul music. I think I've mentioned this before in another thread, but she used to have her friends round and clear the kitchen floor to practice N.S. dance steps on the lino.
Other strong influences over the years have been my friends, plus my own curiosity for new music.
MusicBanter being responsible, lately.

Yeah MusicBanter will give me a nice flavoring, a new layer of frosting on the cake if you will, but the cake was built on reading magazines for anything that sounded frech and of course the super uber world of downloading free msuic since the days of Napster.

I'm fairly sure that no one currently on MB remembers, but when I first started coming here, I was a hardcore punk fan. The Damned, Johnny Thunders, all that ****. But as time passed I started listening to the Leaders Of The New School, Django Reinhardt, Wu Tang Clan, Syl Johnson, Madlib & Stones Throw, Duke Robillard, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, MAC DRE!, Big Pun, & all that noise. I am just happy to have such a broad musical spectrum at the age of 14.

Most of my musical influence is from stalking you guys... I thank you
