MusicBanter Compilation 2006

Well, here she is, the MusicBanter Compilation of songs we must hear at least once!

So over the last 2 weeks I've been accumulating music from all corners of the forum (or do we not have corners? Are we round?) and compiling it into one big album. Thanks to everyone who PM'd me with a track for the album, I think I ended up with something like 28 different tracks from you guys which is awesome.

I didn't ask everyone on the board as it would have taken a very long time but if you didn't get a chance to upload a song or you didn't know about it, feel free to pm me and I'll upload all the extras as a side dish:)

I haven't listened to them yet eather so I'm going to have a good listen to them all now.

The three comps are below, they are completely randomised and I couldn't tell you what you'd get in each one without looking at the list. A good chance to hear some new stuff that rates highly amoung the various members of the boards. I want everyone, if you can, to have a listen to these, as it will hopefully create some good discussion.

Change the xx's to tt's and away you go!

Laces Out Dan! 11-10-2006 08:30 PM

Right on, Its done. Ill download them tomorrow and give you my opinions on all of it.

Merkaba 11-10-2006 08:58 PM

Good man, I've just started having a listen myself. Somewhere, in one of those packages is a song called The Bottle, and possibly in another is a song called La Femme D'Argent which are both really good. The latter is particularly refreshing and soothing. Goin on to some 80's Matchbox Disaster now...

Oh....not bad, not bad;)

Cheese 11-10-2006 09:16 PM

:( It's not happening for me. My system keeps crashing.

Too much for the old girl.

Merkaba 11-10-2006 11:20 PM

It's cool Cheese, I knew you probably wouldn't be able to download this when even uploading a song was a mission:p:

Cheese 11-10-2006 11:42 PM

I guess I'll have to sit this one out.:(

Old stuff is cool, but not when it comes to tech.

sleepy jack 11-11-2006 03:21 AM

I'll download when I can, sorry I couldn't give a song I havn't had time =/

*eager to listen*

Alo 11-11-2006 05:03 AM

I'm downloading right now, I'm excited to see what the others came up with. :D

right-track 11-11-2006 05:05 AM

How many tracks each did members contribute?...I only put one up.

Alo 11-11-2006 05:06 AM

^ I think everyone was supposed to only put one up.

right-track 11-11-2006 05:07 AM

Good...I was beginning to feel mean.

Alo 11-11-2006 06:16 AM

Jimi Hendrix - Spanish Castle Magic, I don't like jimi hendrix all that much, the same goes for this song...

Motograter - Suffocate, I'm usually not into metal, but I really like this song! Really strong. And I like the rapping!

Sigue Sigue Sputnik - Sex-Bomb-Boogie, ha, funny. :') It makes me want to dance the time warp...

Pain of Salvation - Itet Impius, beautifull, the singers' voice sweeps you into the emotion of the song, which gradually builds up. Lovely!

At The Drive-In - Arcarsenal, At the Drive-in , but this songs is not my favorite from at the drive-in, I like the stuff from Acrobatic Tenement better!

80's Matchbox B-Line Disaster - Giant Bones, not my taste, it's not catchy, yet it keeps repeating itself. I don't like the singers voice either.

Suede - Animal Nitrate, it was ok, nothing special.

Gill Scot-Heron - The Bottle, this is more like it! Relaxed music, it reminds me of the Talking Heads a little. The flute is weaved in, in a cute way.

Dream Theater - Scene Four: Beyond This Life, how can one not love this? Except for the solo, it shows some talent, but still, it's a same old same old slightly altered riff. And the song is too long, that slightly ruins it too.

Big Boys - Heart Beat, cute, catchy, but the instruments/singer aren't enthusiastic enough about themselves, I hear no passion...

That's it for now. I'll continue later.

Muzak 11-11-2006 08:25 AM

Sweet! Hope everyone likes my song.

cardboard adolescent 11-11-2006 10:22 AM

Sweet, I've been meaning to listen to Big Boys forever.

The Dave 11-11-2006 02:00 PM

Hope everyone likes the one I gave, i'm downloading now.

Merkaba 11-11-2006 02:54 PM

I actually enjoyed the Dream Theater song apart from the a few bits around 4-5 minutes to go, where I thought it was some classic technical filler that didn't fit into the piece properly. But apart from that I enjoyed a fair chunk of it. The dude on vocals wasn't half as annoying as he is in other songs. Nice pick on the whole.

I have enjoyed all the songs apart from Motograter, it wasn't quite my thing in terms of vocals. Neither was Between the Buried and Me but the song chopped up the tempos in so many different ways it was actually a pretty awesome song in the end.

Good Morning Captain was amazing, probably my favourite of the lot.

Billie Holiday was a huge suprise, but still really enjoyable.

Some people uploaded more than 1, which is cool because I'll still chuck them in later on as and extra compilation.

cardboard adolescent 11-11-2006 07:04 PM

I know this makes me a freak, but it really bothers me that some of you can't properly tag your music.

Quick note on the ratings: 5 means I would go out and buy it, I love it, 4 means it's pretty good, I might download it, 3 means that I didn't like it or dislike it, pretty neutral but probably won't listen to it again, 2 means pretty bad, and if it got a 1 it either means I really dislike it or it's Van Halen so it gets a 1 on principle. If it has a little star next to it it means I've heard it before.

5 stars

*Jefferson Airplane - White Rabbit
*Melvins - A History of Bad Men
King Buzzo - Skeeter
*Jimi Hendrix - Spanish Castle Magic
Big Boys - Heartbeat (probably my favorite song that I haven't heard before on this comp)
Gil Scott-Heron - The Bottle
*Air - La Femme d'Argent
80s Matchbox B-Line Disaster - Giant Bones

4 stars

Babes In Toyland - Won't Tell
Streetlight Manifesto - A Better Place, A Better Time (honestly though, who makes a six minute ska song?)
Sigue Sigue Sputnik - Sex-Bomb-Boogie
*Flogging Molly - What's Left of the Flag
Suede - Animal Nitrate
Faith No More - Hippie Jam Song

3 Stars

Porcupine Tree - Collapse the Light Into Earth
Dream Theater - Scene Four: Beyond This Life
Of Montreal - Wraith Pinned to the Mist and Other Games
At The Drive-In - Arcarsenal
Amusement Parks On Fire - Out of the Angels
Horizontal Orange - Lessthanthree (what a terrible title)
*Rise Against - Halfway There (imo, not one of the better rise against songs, and I don't really like them that much anymore)
Billie Holiday - Come Rain or Come Shine (I really couldn't decide how I felt about this song)

2 Stars

Pain of Salvation - Iter Impius
Black Label Society - Sold My SOul
Okkervil River - For Real
Motograter - Suffocate

1 Star

Van Halen - Jump
Between the Buried & Me - More of Myself to Kill

Remember, don't have a hissy fit, this is all personal opinion.

Motograter - Suffocate

Ya'll been drinkin' dat "Hater-ade":p:

Urban Hat€monger ? 11-11-2006 09:33 PM

I`ve listened to the first comp , here`s my opinions. Don`t expect any mercy.....

80's Matchbox B-Line Disaster - Giant Bones
I like this band , this isn`t the song I would have chosen and it`s not really a favourite of mine , but it`s alright

Big Boys - Heartbeat
Sounded to me like one of those 70s pop rock bands with a bit of early 80s power pop thrown in.I like this a lot I want to hear more.

Gil Scott-Heron - The Bottle
Bet I know who`s choice this was ;) , I like this a lot , again I wouldn`t mind hearing some more. I heard one of his albums a couple of years ago & it didn`t really grab me. Maybe a re-evaluation is in order.

Motograter - Suffocate
Just sounds like every metal cliche going , bands like this are why I hardly listen to metal anymore. I bet they all have beards & tattoos.

Sigue Sigue Sputnik - Sex Bomb Boogie
 I don`t think i`ve heard this song for about 18 or so years. I still knew all the words though :o:

At The Drive In - Arcarsenal
I`ve always thought this was one of the weaker songs on the album , I like the band i`m just not that keen on this song.

Dream Theater - Beyond This Life
I gave it a chance , really I did but after I found myself skipping bits after about 50 seconds , the extended guitar solo made me want to vomit , so did the extended keyboard solo , the vocalist and the painfully cliched lyrics made me wish I was vomiting over him. Everything I hate about music summed up in an overlong 11 minute wankfest.

Jimi Hendrix - Spanish Castle Magic
Ahhhhhh Jimi , after enduring Dream Theater this was such sweet relief. This is one of my favourite Hendrix tunes anyway so it gets high marks from me.I`m just glad it was this version and not Yngwie Malmsteens abomination that was included. Having to listen to both that and Dream Theater would have probably given me a brain aneurysm.

Pain Of Salvation - Iter Impius

Reason to hate the 80s Number 12,756,765

80s power ballads like this one

What do you mean it`s not that old?
F*ck , I hope this revival dies out pretty sharpish

Suede - Animal Nitrate
Amazing , Brilliant , Fantastic song , whoever uploaded this is a genius.

what? :o:

Porcupine Tree - Collapse the Light Into Earth

I knew this song wouldn't go down extremely well or extremely badly (which in hindsight makes me wonder why I picked it) but Porcupine Tree have a lot of songs where the first 2 minutes kick arse or are what you'd like to remember the song for, and then the last half usually drags a tad. There is another track called Strip the Soul, which has a killer intro of bass and then the drums come in, and then the vocals, not too dissimilar to the Melvins 'Night Goat' in terms of style, but the remaining 5 or so minutes is a bit on the drawn-out side.

Porcupine Tree are a really decent outfit however and a lot of their songs have that eerie feel to them, whether they are heavy and crushing or soft, cold and damp; but being a prog band I find they do tend to let it roll for a little too long on some pieces. Collapse The Light Into Earth is off the In Absentia album, they string together some tighter songs on the later album Deadwing, but they have a fairly different sound altogether on that one too.

Glad you liked Skeeter;)
That was a little extra I chucked in on the side, because I love the music and the story is a crazy out-of-nowhere sort of thing. It was originally written by Dave Grohl for his solo album Late! Pocketwatch, but Buzzo covered it as Grohl was drumming for the production of King Buzzo's EP. And when I say covered I mean he must have put his own twist on it in the editing studio (or whatever), because apparently he never actually played a part in the performance of that song.

Spike*Spiegel 11-11-2006 11:44 PM

when's the next compilation's release date?

Merkaba 11-11-2006 11:47 PM

The extra songs should be a day away, I've gotta download a few more before I can up them as a comp:)

right-track 11-12-2006 02:50 AM

Still going through the music...I'll opinionate later.

We could all contribute to a genre compilation in the future.
Everybody should have heard of at least one track from a particular genre...could prove interesting.

Love the person who upped Billie Holiday...nice.

'What's Left Of The Flag' - Flogging Molly, would go down a bomb in a local Irish pub round our way. Ran by a lad called O'Mara (who I don't like) to be played at last orders, then swiftly retreat to a safe distance...to view the destruction.

MoonlitSunshine 11-12-2006 06:13 AM

Cool! I've been waiting for this! Downloading now...

Muzak 11-12-2006 07:59 AM

I really like the Dream Theater and Porcupine Tree.

MoonlitSunshine 11-12-2006 08:32 AM

Beyond this life is often named their best song, but to really get it you have to listen to the entire album, as the entire thing is pretty much one song split into parts.

Mr Sensitive 11-12-2006 10:55 AM

My contribution is quite excellent.

MoonlitSunshine 11-12-2006 11:21 AM

If you're gonna say that, you have to say what it was...
