I think the two are completely separate experiences. I don't particularly like Be Your Own Pet, but live they were fun as hell just because the crowd was actually getting into the music. On the other hand, there are a lot of bands who make great CD's but who rely heavily on "studio magic," or who dub, use samples, etc. and who would lose half their essence live.
And then there are crazy hermits like Jandek who don't really seem to be making their music for anyone but themselves and don't really care about touring. But they're generally in the minority. So you can like a band because they kick ass live, or because they're great on CD, or both, but I don't think it's fair to write a band off because they're great in one aspect but not the other. |
