Yes because 95% of that movement was made up of sh*t copycat bands with nothing remotly interesting to listen to.

maybe so, but THEY WERE COPYING NIRVANA:usehead:
meaning that Nirvana was a huge influence on music
as opposed to Radiohead who only used huge influences from other people's music

So who are these hundreds of good bands Nirvana influenced?
I don`t see any , and please leave out any generic MTV sh*te out of any list you make.

Friday 12-24-2006 10:06 AM

'Head's influence will be going on for decades. Not just in one short burst like Nirvana.

are you seriously denying that Nirvana had no influence on music as we know it today? or even going as far as to insinuate that Radiohead had a greater influence?

And Im not saying that Nevermind should be at number 1 (which maybe it should, but w/e), im just saying it should be before OK Computer. And if they made number 6, even if the list is f'd up, you have to admit thats still pretty damn good.

That's nothing really in music. Ok's impact on music will spread slowly and will still seem fresh whereas Nevermind already sounds dated.

well, this is just opinion vs. opinion so I'm gonna let it rest.

Well he didn't say that, I think he meant that Nirvana had an awful influence on music, which is why we have horrible bands like Nickleback today.

Urban Hat€monger ? 12-24-2006 10:15 AM

As far as 'underground' music today goes I think bands like Slint & Pavement had a much bigger influence than Nirvana ever did.

Youre going to hell. Damnit! I need to stop replying.

Friday 12-24-2006 10:16 AM

I can dig that.

Another point, as someone who has listened to the majority of Queen's back catalogue. Why pick Night At The Opera? Apart from its one defining song it is awful and overly pompous. Queen's debut was far less dull aswell.

Edit : Screw the Palatino Linotype. Too much hassle

Urban Hat€monger ? 12-24-2006 10:18 AM

Shame Queen didn`t split up in 1975 , those first 3 albums were quality

right-track 12-24-2006 10:18 AM

Agreed^

I agree with that. I have some early recordings from a session at the Beeb which are really good. It's excellent without Brian May's smug attitude aswell.

right-track 12-24-2006 10:23 AM

Tunes like Seven Seas Of Rhye...Sheer Heart Attack were far better than the lameness of tracks like Fat Bottomed Girl, Radio Ga-ga etc.
Great band live though.

right-track 12-24-2006 10:25 AM

I still can't believe Oasis made No 1.
Here in Manchester, the local all time album chart, doesn't have them in the top 5 Manchester bands.

MURDER JUNKIE 12-24-2006 10:28 AM

Basically what this poll states is that Oasis are better than the Beatles, Christ imagine the size of Noel's head now.

Mentioning The Sex Pistols and the Clash in the same list without the inclusion of the Ramones discredits the entire list, you brits sure love your generic music

HAHAHA. WOW, sex pistols... better than radiohead? what mind altering drugs are you on? and nirvana made one very good album and performed a great acoustic set once, radiohead have consistently made very good albums for 11 years.

elevator 01-11-2007 07:26 PM

If not Nevermind The Bullocks, then the Clash's self-titled, or Damned, Damned, Damned. The album didn't do much that any other couldn't have done.

More influential, yes. But not as good. If you think it is anywhere near as good you probably are deaf and/or stupid.

If the list were about overall influence on the music world then it would have to include Britney Spear's first album and something by Madonna too.

Can everybody now please ignore the NME completely. We know it's crap, if we don't pay it any attention it might go away.

littleknowitall 01-12-2007 07:57 AM

Nowhere on that list did they have appetite for destruction! that's probably the greatest debut album i can think of, and it's fantastic.

tdoc210 01-12-2007 08:53 AM

is nme...like the british rolling stone?

Urban Hat€monger ? 01-12-2007 09:03 AM

Much worse..

The British Rolling Stone as made by indie kids

NaNaNer 01-12-2007 09:49 AM

I wonder how the compile this information..I mean there must be a group of people somewhere researching this..right?

By the look of that list i`d say it`s compiled with a dartboard & a blindfold

NaNaNer 01-12-2007 10:08 AM

I would have to agree only because there is really no think outside the box reason to this..the beatles, led zeppelin is great..etc..but it all seems cliche..

TheBig3 01-12-2007 10:13 AM

If its the British Rolling Stone made by Indie Kids, then its the British Spin.

Well I don't think we should ignore what NME says because if we were to review a competent list, even if we disagreed there wouldn't be 8 pages of replies.

In defence of Nirvana, most people regard In Utero as better. Not me per say, but people, and a few publications. I think Nevermind deserves a spot on the list. Heres my arguments as to why.

1. Yeah same old chords, thats fine, fancy guitar work isn't always needed, but Kurt should be remembered more for the vocal melodies than his guitar work. His songs were something that brought passion back, and that passion can be felt in a song in my opinion. Who knows, perhaps its diffrent for the Brits.

2. Sure their is a lot of waste we can thank Cobain for, but that doens't mean actual good bands won't be inspiried years down the road. They say the heir to the throne of Led Zeppelin was Janes Addiction and how many years later did they arrive? How many **** bands did they create. I'm not making the comparison, just making a point. Don't count Nirvana out yet, I think theres a 14 year old in his basement somewhere making great music because of Nevermind but just because he's not dropping discs now doesn't mean he won't.

3. I happen to think Ghrol's drum work is something thats impressive. Let it be the musicality of the record then.

4. I thin perhaps there was a race to see who could bash them the most, or maybe a distancing of one's self from oojay (which is understandable) but lets be fair, it may not be one of the Top 10, but its not so out of line to think someone would put it on there.

Actually when U2 started they were dubbed the next Led Zeppelin.

TheBig3 01-12-2007 10:54 AM

Yeah but that doesn't still stand.

Crowe 01-12-2007 11:48 AM

I love Night at the Opera. Calling it overblown, pompous rubbish is overblown pompous rubbish in itself.

Love,

Word.

Again it well illustrates how different Urbans musicial view is from mine, I've tried getting into some of the bands Urban likes, and Super Furry Animals, Primal Scream and Aphex Twin aside I don't like any of it... I recall listening to Pulp, and then trying to get someone to euthanize me afterwards.

TheBig3 01-12-2007 01:28 PM

SFA is worth another shot honestly.

Urban Hat€monger ? 01-12-2007 01:43 PM

I like the first 3 Queen albums , I even called Live Killers one of the best live albums i`ve ever heard.

I just really really hate Bohemian Rhapsody.

You should hear Gruff Rhys`s new solo album Candylion.

Reminds me exactly why I loved SFA in the first place.
