Look at Nirvana`s Nevermind. As much as i`m not really a fan of it it`s impact was instant. The same with Never Mind The Bollocks.
Massive Attack`s Blue Lines came out in 1991 , by 93/94 Trip Hop was an established genre.
The Smiths had more magazine covers between 1982-1987 than the Beatles did throughout the entire 60s.
How long was it before we had sh*tloads of Radiohead clones after OK Computer? I started seeing them as early as 98/99.

Like I said influence is one thing , but it`s not the only thing.
I agree, some albums make an immediate impact and it's certain from the get-go they'll become timeless classics. I'd say that's the case with The Mars Volta De-Loused in the Comatorium, Queens of the Stone Age Songs for the Deaf, Ryan Adams - Heartbreaker and so on...not many such albums, but they still exist. Besides, it's 2007 already, we're nearing the end of this decade, I think we have some perspective by now.

I don't think "Songs for the Deaf" is going to be considered a classic in ten years. But that's just me.

Sure it is...if only because I said so.

Who's responsible for editing the list in the first post?

You or Ethan?

Depends, is there something wrong with it? In that case, Ethan, I swear!

And I don't think in twenty, anyone will know Ryan Adams as anything more than the guy with a case of musical diarrhea. Granted he's got some decent records...but does he need to record and release everything he writes? I'll take quality over quantity any day.

I'm not railing against Heartbreaker specifically, because I haven't heard that album (for all I know it could be great). I'm just saying I find him to be generally rather non-essential.

You've obviously not heard Cold Roses. I actually think CR is his best work but Heartbreaker seems to be most critically acclaimed. And yes, he does seem to be rather inconsistent, but IMO, he is one of the most talented and important singer-songwriters of the new millennium. He did nothing to revolutionize the genre sure, but has brought alt-country back into focus/mainstream.

Actually I like Cold Roses. Do I think it needed to be a double album? Not really. I think he released a double album to say: "look what I can do!" and because he has a bit of a poor critical ear for his own work.

That said..."Magnolia Mountain" is one of the best songs the Grateful Dead never wrote in their Country-Rock period. And he slips into falsetto vocals with a sense of class that few can muster anymore. So anyway...I'm not saying I dislike the guy...
