I never referred to it as VD either, I have no qualms with the majority of commercial music, in fact 2 of my most played songs on lastfm account are from Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain. I just don't think that it is their most intovative or musically superior album, like most commercial albums.
The thing though with Pavement, and Malkmus' songwriting generally, is that its never lost its uniqueness. Slanted was the record that had the lo-fi sound quality that sounded like it was like a 27th generation dub or something with loads of tape noise. Crooked Rain has a far more professional sound to it but the compositions and arrangements on that are still as weird and idiosyncratic as Slanted in my opinion.

by the way, you might it enjoy reading the main article in Magnet this month, it's on Chan Marshall, I assume from your sn that you like her.
I do. I love her. She's my favourite artist. I wrote A History of Cat Power for the history thread but I dont think anybody read it. I don't know about the article though. Im on the Matador forum and somebody who read the Magnet article posted there saying that its a piece of trash and said that its misrepresents her fans, something Im used to journalists doing because they cant resist it, and saying that they just question her at every turn.

I can't think of many articles Ive read about her where the journalist seems to get what shes doing and what shes about. Theyre usually too busy trying to portray her as some kind of female Nick Drake when really what they should be doing is paying attention to what shes saying.

See I think that Pavement's lo-fi sound in combination with their poor production sound is what really made them stand out in the beginning as a new unique sound. That low quality sound is the characteristic that a lot of the bands were influenced by them emulated. So losing that sound is like losing part of their idiosyncrasy. I agree that the lyrics are still very similar, I just think between the two sounds Slanted and Enchanted had the more unique and influential sound.

It did have a good chunk of that Nick Drakeness air in it, especially in the large font quotations on each page. But I guess you have to figure they have to get people to read it somehow, and for those who don't know her they need to shout, depression and alcoholism, to get the readers attention. I agree it's not the most amazing article ever, but they could of misrepresented her much more than they did, she is on the cover of the magazine and has an 8 page spread, which is pretty impressive. I mean if you like her, I still would read it.

Is there anywhere on the internet I can read it? Magnet is hard to get in the UK, we have to order it from America.

This is why I don't like music journalists in general. They dont listen or pay attention to the three dimensional truth, they just find an angle and go at it like a bull at a gate.

Since I am not allowed to do school work I have a lot of time on my hands, so i'll scan (or at least attempt) it on to my computer, and send you the link to it.

I'm first going to the store before it closes to get hair dye, then i'll tackle the scanner. So don't expect it for a couple of hours.

I think the lack of production values is not important in and of itself, but rather, is important because of what it made Pavement become. Because of their lack of professionalism and technical skill, Pavement couldn't have sounded like other bands if they'd wanted to, so they were forced to be creative in other ways. Because of that, we end up with the most skewed interpretation of pop-rock we'd had to that point which kind of birthed the modern indie sound. Consider the fact that "Range Life" is supposed to be alt-country and "Newark Wilder" is supposed to be cabaret. But everything comes out as a charmingly warped version of what it's supposed to be. There's a wonderful sense of discovery in their sound, because it's as though they have no idea how to play their instruments, but then they stumble upon something that's half of what they were striving for, the other half being a kind of jovial noise that makes the music uplifting and free.

The Chemical Brothers, Dig Your Own Hole might have that title being the best album at the peak of big beat.

Doh! I forgot we were talking about Nico...so yeah, I didn't mean to say that Nico was currently in the middle of a successful career. But anyway....
Newsom is a SUCESS! I mean consider how hard it is to get a record deal, and then to be widely critically acclaimed and have your album considered one of the best of the year out of the thousands that were released. Still though, kudos on the coloring contest . I could never stay inside the lines myself.

I'm having issues getting it to scan in a non-blurry fashion. My scanner is extremely old and extremely shoddy, so until my brother comes home with his not-so-shoddy scanner I can't get the article to you.

Dig Your Own Hole better than a Daft Punk album? Are you on crack?
