That's because I fecking love them and have since their debut in 2002. One of the most underrated bands of modern times. New album out this year too, I think Dreaming of You is one of the only true catchy rock/pop songs of this decade.

Am only going to answer for decades I have actually been alive in.

70s - Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath (represents the end of the 'happy hippy '60s'... bring on Anton Lavey!)

80s - The Smiths - How soon is now? (The 'Stairway to Heaven' of the '80s)

90s - Soundgarden - Black Hole Sun (lyrics are better then the non-sensical lyrics of 'smells like teen spirit')

00s - Evanescence - Bring me to life (encapsulates newer-ish genres like nu-metal, rap-rock, and also a renewed interest in goth all in one tune)

Most people put these things in a logical numerical order, but I guess you aren't like most people.

1980's - "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now" ~ The Smiths
1990's - "Touch Sensitive" ~ The Fall
2000's - "Anyway The Wind Blows" ~ J.J. Cale
