Song of the decade

What song is, to you, synonymous to each decade, as in what song sums up the 60s to you? what song sums up the 70s etc? i want this done from the 50s - 00s

adidasss 02-16-2007 11:43 PM

Far too difficult methinks.

I can only name one that seems quintessential for the 80's for me: Toto - Africa

ZeppelinAir 02-17-2007 01:06 AM

50's-Johnny B. Goode-Chuck Berry
60's-My Genteration-The Who
70's-Stairway To Heaven-Led Zeppelin,
80's-Wind Of Change-Scorpions,
90's-Smells Like Teen Spirit-Nirvana
00's-Gets Me Through-Ozzy Osbourne

there, that was a pain in the ass

This is virtually impossible. Maybe a list representing different genre's would make this easier.
Below (with the exception of the 50's and 60's) are immediate choices from memory.
Not representative of my personal taste, but they sprung to mind straight away.

50's: Elvis - 'Hound Dog'
60's: Procol Harem - 'A Lighter Shade Of Pale'
70's: Terry Jacks - 'Seasons In The Sun'
80's: Dexy's Midnight Runners - 'Come On Eileen'
90's: Nirvana - 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'
00's: ?

Urban Hat€monger ? 02-17-2007 02:45 AM

50s Peggy Sue - Buddy Holly (coz of my Dad)
60s Satisfaction - Stones
70s Get It On - T Rex
80s This Charming Man - Smiths
90s Unfinished Sympathy - Massive Attack
00s Seven Nation Army - White Stripes

The final piece of this musical jigsaw of decades...my life is complete.

MURDER JUNKIE 02-17-2007 03:07 AM

50's: Elvis - Hound Dog
60's: Barry McGuire - Eve Of Destruction
70's: Sex Pistols - Anarchy For The UK
80's: The Cure - In Between Days
90's: Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit
00's: The Hives - Hate To Say I Told You So

Kevorkian Logic 02-17-2007 09:54 AM

I am aware that Smells Like Teen Spirit is the one Nirvana song that everyone knows, but I think it is also one of the most overrated. Since I think everyone is stuck on using Nirvana as the 90s i'm not going to bother suggesting other artists. I believe that one of Nirvana's better, though a bit less popular song, like Come As You Are.

The song I would pick though is 21st Century Digital Boy, solely for the reason it got me into Bad Religion, and I think the lyrics are more representative of the 90s than Smells Like Teen Spirit's lyrics are (i'm going to get attacked for saying that).

Did you miss the point of the thread? Aside from the whole its what song goes with each decade for the individual person. I don't see whats so surprising or wrong with using Smells Like Teens Spirit, it was Nirvanas biggest hit and a huge song for the 90s.

I didn't say it was surprising, I honestly expected nothing less than that. Ice, Ice, Baby was a huge song for the 90s and Vanilla Ice's biggest hit, so according to your logic it should be used.

sleepy jack 02-17-2007 01:13 PM

Agreed.

Crowe 02-17-2007 02:46 PM

50's - Bill Haley & His Comets - Rock Around the Clock
60's - Bob Dylan - Blowin' in the Wind
70's - Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody/Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven
80's - The Buggles - Video Killed the Radio Star (yeah, it was released in 1979 but it represents the decade for me, and is pretty damn close anyway)
90's - Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit (Yeah, it really does represent 90's music)
00's - The White Stripes - Fell in Love With a Girl

sleepy jack 02-17-2007 02:50 PM

I'm probably going to end up changing this...

50's: Chuck Berry "Johnny B. Goode" (Back to the future ftw)
60's: The Beatles "Revolution 1"
70's: The Ramones "Blitzkrieg Bop"
80's: The Smiths "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out"
90's: Nirvana "Smells Like Teen Spirit"
00's: Bright Eyes "Let's Not Shit Ourselves (To Love and to Be Loved)"

Urban Hat€monger ? 02-17-2007 05:35 PM

I can`t choose Smells Like Teen Spirit.
For me the 90s were about taking the best from the past and making it sound modern.Bands using beats & samples , adding technology to it and making it relevent to modern day.Music expanded & people mixed & matched genres more in the 90s than ever before and to me Smells Like Teen Spirit is the total antithisis for that. I don`t think Smells Like Teen Spirit is representative of the 90s at all.

littledude 02-18-2007 12:45 PM

Don't include it in your list then, dude. This is personal representation, if I remember correctly.

Urban Hat€monger ? 02-18-2007 01:36 PM

I didn`t, I chose Massive Attack.

I`m only saying why I didn`t choose it as I seem to be the only one that didn`t up until the last couple of posts.

I've been on this forum for almost two years now, but why is it that every time I see coffeeshop's post he seems to be talking about The Coral?

That's because I fecking love them and have since their debut in 2002. One of the most underrated bands of modern times. New album out this year too, I think Dreaming of You is one of the only true catchy rock/pop songs of this decade.

whimsical 02-24-2007 06:04 AM

Gimme Shelter for the 60's.

slatesphanboi 03-11-2012 01:06 AM

Am only going to answer for decades I have actually been alive in.

70s - Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath (represents the end of the 'happy hippy '60s'... bring on Anton Lavey!)

80s - The Smiths - How soon is now? (The 'Stairway to Heaven' of the '80s)

90s - Soundgarden - Black Hole Sun (lyrics are better then the non-sensical lyrics of 'smells like teen spirit')

00s - Evanescence - Bring me to life (encapsulates newer-ish genres like nu-metal, rap-rock, and also a renewed interest in goth all in one tune)

Scarlett O'Hara 03-12-2012 05:35 AM

60's: The Rolling Stones - Let It Bleed
70's: Eric Clapton - Slowhand
80's: Crowded House - Self Titled
90's: The Cranberries - To The Faithful Departed
00's: Iron Maiden - Brave New World

Most people put these things in a logical numerical order, but I guess you aren't like most people.

Salami 03-12-2012 03:19 PM
