bitte schon

PopIsDead 04-18-2007 08:07 PM

I just listened to that Arab On Radar album that you uploaded, and I'd have to say, it's pretty damn good. I read on wikipedia that they often got comparisons to the Contortions and I can definitely see how people would compare the two. Thanks again for the upload. I enjoy this music thoroughly.

Bama Boy 04-18-2007 08:14 PM

Does it matter about genre?

PopIsDead 04-18-2007 08:40 PM

You mean sub-genres of avant-garde or experimental?

PopIsDead 04-18-2007 08:50 PM

Here's all of Tweedles! by The Residents if any of you are interested. You see, the thing about the Residents is that most if not all of their albums are concept albums. It's great. They have like 60 albums too. Tweedles!

nervous cop ftw

Urban Hat€monger ? 04-19-2007 12:32 PM

I wouldn't mind seeing an Avant-garde/Experimental forum.

I think the reason this should be implimented as opposed to other suggestions is because it isn't a sub-genre of forums that are already here like pretty much all requests for forums are.
Avant-garde/Experimental covers such a wide base , it can be anything from Krautrock to Jazz to No Wave , to Electronica to Noise and many many more.

Added to this there are a lot of regular posters who are into experimental music so the forum would get used often. In fact I think it would be just as popular as the emo forum if it was done , only without the silly arguements debating the emoness (or lack of it) of some bands

PopIsDead 04-19-2007 10:12 PM

I agree full heartedly. That is also why I think an avant-garde/experimental forum would be a great addition to this website.

Sound Devastation 04-20-2007 04:04 AM

I think it would definately be a good addition. Ive found myself spending less and less time here, because any good convos on interesting bands just seem to die out.. a forum would keep convos about Arab on Radar for example, going. I cant think of any other forums that have a section for this type of music either....

sleepy jack 04-20-2007 04:20 AM

What exactly is avant-garde? I've seen the term a few times but never applied to a specific band the only time was when I downloaded a Kayo Dot album the genre was avant-garde.

Sound Devastation 04-20-2007 08:04 AM

Avant-garde literally means 'without barriers' and can cover bands from all sorts of genres and backgrounds. My local record store has an 'avant-garde' section which contains noise, no-wave, drone, dark ambient, freak-folk, modern free jazz and improv.

Six Organs of Admittance are found alongside Merzbow, Arab on Radar, Zorn, Sunn O))) and Kayo Dot.. although they couldn't sound more different they appeal to the same group of people through their experimentation, and have therefore been grouped as avant-garde.

its impossible to say what does and what doesnt fall into the genre though..

DidierD 04-20-2007 09:07 AM

would math rock count as Avant-garde?

Sound Devastation 04-20-2007 09:58 AM

not the whole genre no... some bands probably could be though.

I'd agree with that.
I'd say avant-garde isn't even a genre, but is like you said, "without barriers" and can be found within all existing genres.

cardboard adolescent 04-20-2007 10:21 AM

Avant-garde doesn't literally mean without barriers.

I didn't say it was a definition, this is a definition of avant-garde I posted earlier in the thread.
It is true to say though, it is without barriers. As SD stated.

cardboard adolescent 04-20-2007 02:22 PM

That is a definition, but it's not what it literally means. It literally means front guard.

I was just being an anal retentive ass for reasons unknown.

right-track 04-20-2007 02:41 PM

Which is what the definition says.
No worries...I was being a pedantic twat, also for unknown reasons...

...does this mean we were being avant-garde?!?

Kevorkian Logic 04-20-2007 03:24 PM

according to my history book all forms of avant-garde went out of fashion in 80s.

right-track 04-20-2007 03:33 PM

So what replaced it?...

...nouveau-avante-garde?
avante-garde-nouveaux?
post avante-garde?

Your history books are ridiculous...how can anything experimental go out of fashion?

Kevorkian Logic 04-20-2007 03:37 PM

to quote "the idea of the avant-garde as a revolt of creative minds against the class no longer had meaning. The masses now followed a new philosophy that would shape history for the next few decades."

make what you want from that.

right-track 04-20-2007 03:44 PM

Does it specify what this "new philosophy" is?

And that specifically states, the idea of avant-garde, pertaining to a revolt of creative minds against the class (whatever "the class" is) and is not aimed at avant-garde per say.

Kevorkian Logic 04-20-2007 04:49 PM

It talks about the inner-conscious and how people abstractly expressed it, I don't know what you call that, abstract expressionism?

very true, misread on my part.

Urban Hat€monger ? 04-20-2007 04:50 PM

I'd call it a load of bollocks myself

right-track 04-20-2007 04:56 PM

That would be 'collective testicle expressionism' if I'm not mistaken. ;)

Urban Hat€monger ? 04-20-2007 05:16 PM

Collective testicle post expressionism actually ;)

beat yr own KID 04-20-2007 06:00 PM

Is this where we can jack off to boards of canada?

CAPTAIN CAVEMAN 04-20-2007 07:39 PM

Well, you could do that anywhere. Its the moral questions it raises.

Jack off to that or like Animal Collective.

Urban Hat€monger ? 04-22-2007 07:31 AM

Animal Collective & Boards Of Canada?

You can jack off about them anywhere. I'm not saying their bad bands but they're hardly attention starved.

Now if we had this forum for bands like Aavikko or Holy Fuck , that would be more like it.

PopIsDead 04-22-2007 05:38 PM

I can agree with that. I haven't heard Aavikko but I have heard Holy ****. If they were a food, they'd be delicious.

PopIsDead 04-25-2007 06:18 PM

I need to resurrect this thread, because I still believe we should have an avant-garde/experimental forum. I feel like an ass.

Inuzuka Skysword 04-25-2007 06:37 PM

I would love there to be a AG forum. I listen to a lot of it myself.

PopIsDead 05-22-2007 06:25 PM

Where else besides an avant-garde/experimental forum would one put threads about bands such as Secret Chiefs 3 or The Residents?

cardboard adolescent 05-22-2007 06:30 PM

alternative... general music... rock?

PopIsDead 05-22-2007 06:32 PM

It could just as easily be put in electronica or world music.

cardboard adolescent 05-22-2007 06:35 PM

you could make a case for secret chiefs 3 in world music

i would just put them in whatever forum you think will gain them the most attention. i think having an avant-garde forum would be pretty pretentious, and it might even beat out the emo forum for most elitist forum on here. plus, who decides what constitutes "avant-garde?" personally I wouldn't put secret chiefs 3 or mr. bungle under there... experimental maybe but even Radiohead could fall under that category.

PopIsDead 05-22-2007 06:39 PM

Actually, I'm thinking that an "other music" forum would be best. You could put whatever in there that you think doesn't fit cleanly into the other forums.

cardboard adolescent 05-22-2007 06:44 PM

couldn't you just use general music for that?

PopIsDead 05-22-2007 06:44 PM

Never!
