I saw the Arcade Fire last month and they were amazing live.
Nine Inch Nails are also amazing live. Their set are always good with amazing visuals. |
tera melos and heavy heavy low low both put on amazing shows.
the only catch with tera melos is that they have to have a lot of space to move around for it to be really really good. |

Bump.
I was watching a RHCP doc (*insert cringe here*) and was wondering: who are the truly great live acts of today? You know, the ones like 1980s RHCP that grabbed hold of an audience and shook the ever living shit out of them? |
rhcp were utter clown shoes when i saw them, i hated every minute of it. not really sure who'd be classed in general as an amazing live band these days, but over the past few years i'd say my favourite few live acts have been..
pixies dinosaur jr. mogwai pavement beck nine inch nails teenage fanclub brand new the specials nick cave and the bad seeds arcade fire muse (not a fan of their music, but their live shows are utterly fantastic) animal collective (as above) modest mouse the strokes lady gaga hole prince fucked up interpol radiohead bruce springsteen yeah yeah yeahs alexisonfire blur death cab for cutie bon iver the new pornographers belle and sebastian the vaselines kanye west deftones glassjaw built to spill the flaming lips silversun pickups dirty projectors stevie wonder orbital the national wooden shjips placebo probably a couple of others, but these are the ones which stand out to me the most. i remember how i felt after each and every one, feeling buzzed from a gig is the best thing ever. i'll probably come back and update this list next week after i've seen sonic youth, got a feeling they're going to impress me beyond expectations. |
I totally get you, man. The couple shows I've been too I have thoroughly enjoyed, great performances with a good amount of energy. But I'm talking absolutely insane live. Like, I love Pixies, Dinosaur Jr., Modest Mouse, and The Strokes, but they simply aren't what I'm talking about. I mean the band that is a legend almost entirely because of the show they put on. I don't know how else to express it other than old RHCP clips:
|
Yeah I dont think any of the bands I listed would be pinned and hyped as good live bands, they were just my personal choice from seeing them in the past. I dont think there is anyone like that at present unfortunately, over here KoL get hyped a lot but its not really for their live shows.
|
I believe truly great live performances consistently come from Gogol Bordello and Flobots, at the moment. Les Claypool still puts on a great time.

I saw Interpol and Arcade Fire in November, both were sensational especially Interpol. One of the tightest live bands in the world right now.

yeah man your sig sucks. but i do agree alexisonfire are mindblowing at shows, this was back in 2007 when the ghost of a thousand & saosin played with them. it was incredible, they were on top form.
also, add queens of the stone age to my list. forgot i'd seen them, they are one of the best live bands around, even now. no one does rock n roll like josh homme now. |
Bands that are either utterly consistent over many years or expand on their sound live and bring something different to each show do it for me.
Iron Maiden are probably one of the worlds best live bands out there but on the flip you get other bands that expand upon their sound live and really come alive in a live situation. I have posted this a few times but it is a perfect example of a band that are much more than their studio recordings would suggest. Live instrumentation, timing, engineering and emphasis on real instruments than a quick fix on decks in a nightclub. I have seen many bands in my time and class Faithless as one of the very best I have ever seen. |
Bruce Springsteen is by far the best live act I've seen, and I'm not even that much of a fan. Prince put on a pretty kick-ass show too, but I'd expect nothing less of him.
Of the bands I've seen, including the above two, Jonny Lang, Sevendust, and Third Eye Blind also put on great shows. Hate on their music all you want, but they are pretty decent performers. Oh, and how can we forget ZZ Top? Simply amazing...fun AND talented, delightfully over the top. If y'all ever get the chance to see them, you really shouldn't pass it up. Conversely, two bands that I used to love, Kenny Wayne Shepherd band and Black Label Society, sucked so hugely in concert it broke my heart. |
oasis!
|
I really didn't enjoy Iron Maiden when I saw them, it's probably because I don't care for them at all and didn't really engage myself in it. I'd agree with Faithless though for sure, I saw them at an open air festival and they were incredible so I'd love to see them in a venue. Did you go to that Ally Pally gig? I'd have loved that.
