Real Music for Kids??? PLEASE HELP!!!

Hello Everyone!

This is my first post on this forum.
OK, here's the problem...

My neice just turned 6 years old. She LOVES music, and she just got her first CD boom-box for her birthday.

She does not like stuff like "Kidz-Bop" where the music has been re-recorded as a children's song. She wants the "real thing".

So I'm trying to compile a list of CD's that a child would like and hit the used-CD store.

So far I've got The Shrek and Shrek 2 soundtracks, also i think the Madagascar soundtrack.
I also think she will like Sarah McLachlan Surfacing, and Bob Marley's best-of CD. I think maybe some Smashmouth and John Mayer's first one.
Probably also some disney-type Hip Hop like A-teens or something.

SOOO....

What other CD's (Artist and specific album if possible) are appropriate for a little kid that loves real music, not that cheesy made-for-kids stuff???

THANKS!

I agree, the Beatles tunes are quite catchy. And you are getting her Bob Marley O_O?

brandon24 04-24-2007 05:49 PM

maybe bob marley not such a great idea, i can always burn a copy without "i shot the sherrif" "i like to smoke weed" etc

thanks for the super-fast responses, anyone got more?

cardboard adolescent 04-24-2007 05:52 PM

Ramones - S/T
Frank Zappa - Apostrophe/Overnight Sensation
Nick Drake - Pink Moon
The Smiths - The Queen is Dead
The Clash - London Calling
The Kinks - Village Green Preservation Society
The Buzzcocks - Singles Going Steady

It's never too early to fight bad taste!

Laces Out Dan! 04-24-2007 05:56 PM

Maybe an Elton John compilation.
I also think the Bob Marley is a really good...rastaman vibrations type stuff...just a good happy time. 6 yr olds dig that stuff.

Inuzuka Skysword 04-24-2007 08:12 PM

Unless you want her to be a drug addict, I don't suggest any Psyc. music at her age.

cardboard adolescent 04-24-2007 08:19 PM

hows a six year old gonna get drugs unless i sell 'em to her

speaking of which, anyone wanna buy some drugs?

A_Perfect_Sonnet 04-24-2007 09:12 PM

She might like some indie-rock type bands.

Stars
Heartwarmer
The Arcade Fire
Neutral Milk Hotel
Interpol
The Decemberists
Death Cab For Cutie

joshrlyon 04-25-2007 02:12 PM

think six year olds guys... this girl got out of diapers not to long ago.

Things like john mayer and such are good because they are very musical and will cater to the childs needs to develope characteristics of rythm. Coordination links to this part of the brain. a good combination of slow, up-beat, and other types of music are essential. (and also tasteful) Let her listen to John william (great composer) as she sleeps. It will enhance her creativity and imagination. Peace.....

cardboard adolescent 04-25-2007 03:55 PM

I loved John Williams when I was around that age (Star Wars soundtrack, obviously) but if someone had spoon-fed me crap like John Mayer I could have turned out as a TOOL. I'm glad I grew up listening to Smashing Pumpkins, RHCP, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, etc. 90's alternative radio was a good thing to grow up on...

Kevorkian Logic 04-25-2007 04:36 PM

^your such a nerd.

But if you want your child to turn out to be a bit of a whore feed her stuff like Britney Spears
Christina Agularia(sp),
Aqua (barbie girl) lyrics lie " Make me walk, make me talk, do whatever you please I can act like a star, I can beg on my knees" is pure magic for a young child developments.
N*SYNC is also very good for a child

Ok, that's my knowledge on pop music from when I was little.

brandon24 04-25-2007 11:10 PM

great, great suggestions by all

speaking of age, my age is 34, i'm supposed to be the cool-music-uncle-dude,

i would like to add paul simon graceland.

of course i will listen to all of the cd's before i decide to plug them into her little brain.

one day when she was about 4, we were at our dad's for christmas, he had new-agey soft music on, she hugged the speaker and said "this music is gorgeous"

she does like the hip-hoppy bounce around music like her mother, michael jackson thriller??

brandon24 04-25-2007 11:14 PM

which reminds me, this past xmas i was putting up some lights with her brother outside, i was playing led zeppelin, she was definately rocking to it.

good call, i won't spoon feed her john mayer unless of course she likes it.

The Unfan 04-26-2007 09:48 AM

Frontline Assembly, KMFDM, VNV Nation, Pig, Schwein, Nitzer Ebb, Mortuary Hacking Session, Gigantic Brain, The Number 12 Looks Like You, Genghis Tron, Kylesa, Baroness, Pearl Jam, Mudhoney, Closer Than Kin, Network Network, Dio, Black Sabbath, Iron And Wine, Bee & Flower, Jim Croce, Jeff Buckley, Anal ****, Bobby Fuller Four, Thelonius Monk, Chick Webb, River Bottom Nightmare...stuff. There should be a fair variety in there which should help her tastes expand.

kheffelf 04-26-2007 03:26 PM

The Beatles would definitely be good-I would go with The Beatles 1
Relient K-any album really catchy poppy fun lyrics-their first album has a song about Marily Manson-self titled is their first album.
I grew up on Christian music and when I was ten I hit the Christian punk scene-like Mxpx, Slick Shoes, etc.
I was also a big DC Talk fan back then.
The Zombies-Odyssey and Oracle
Kriss Kross-Totally Krossed out-I liked them when I was six.
The Monkees-Greatist Hits
Beach Boys-Endless Summer

Hopefully this helps you out some.

Kevorkian Logic 04-26-2007 03:39 PM

I touch myself- Blondie

one of my favorite songs when I was little.

Definitely :) Oldies tend to be a bit more tame lyrically and have great melodies.

Calmest Chord 04-28-2007 03:21 PM

Sigur Ros is beautiful music, she would probably like that. They are from Iceland, and the singer is one of the best ever.

Also try: Dredg, Pink Floyd, Kayo Dot, Massive Attack, Godspeed you! Black Emperor, Jeff Buckley, Nick Drake, Maroon 5, and Mew.

Trauma 04-28-2007 05:04 PM

^
I was just about to say Sigur Ros.

Sigur Ros (chill, beautiful post rock)
Elliott Smith (amazingly good singer songwriter)
Sunny Day Real Estate (beautiful post emo, very pretty)
American Football (beautiful indie music, also very pretty)
Boards Of Canada (mostly chillout electronic music)
Bright Eyes (good singer songwriter)
Count Basie (everyone should listen to jazz)
The Cure (just a must listen)
Death Cab For Cutie (chill)
Ella Fitzgerald (beautiful jazz vocalist)
John Coltrane (legend)
The Libertines (mostly feel good moments that kids would like, indie rock)
The Most Serene Republic (beautifully chill electronic indie)
The Postal Service (electro-pop, feel good music)
Muse (pretty good rock band)
Ratatat (feel good electronica)
Rocky Votolato (mostly happy singer songwriter, I wouldn't recommend Nick Drake)
Rush (legend)

If you're looking for some pretty gorgeous new age stuff, I'd recommend:

Celtic Woman
Moya Brennan
Clannad
Loreena McKennitt
Enya
Sarah Brightman

All are extremely beautiful

The Unfan 04-28-2007 08:31 PM

Camel.

sleepy jack 04-28-2007 09:47 PM

You wouldn't recommend Nick Drake because hes sad...but you recommend Elliott and Bright Eyes? That and bright eyes and elliott swear quite a bit this is a little kid, Nick Drake would be more appropriate.

Urban Hat€monger ? 04-28-2007 10:14 PM

I don't know why people would suggest post rock for a 6 year old , hell I find about 80% of it boring now , God knows what I would have thought of it when I was 6.
When I was that age I wanted short catchy songs I could sing along to. I think mainstream rock thats easy to find on the radio would be the most ideal , stuff like The Killers , Kasier Chiefs , Razorlight ...stuff thats energetic & catchy.

Blain 04-28-2007 10:29 PM

Maybe a bit of Joy Division, I always liked it when my brother played them as a kid.

I find this odd as when I was a kid my favorite songs were jazzier songs with big solos in them.

Specifically, I would recommend:
Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning
Elliott Smith - XO

They don't swear too much on those, and they have a pretty aesthetic and soothing quality about them.
Even though Smith is just about as depressing as Drake, it's much more subtle, I don't think a kid would realize it.

I only recommended Sigur Ros, because most of their songs are beautifully crafted and happy.

Also, that catchy rock stuff is a must for kids, I just wouldn't personally recommend it.

Anyway, I'm with cardboard adolescent, I was raised on Rage Against the Machine/Nirvana/Smashing Pumpkins, that's the way to go, I'm also with him on a sexual level btw.

XO is one of Elliotts saddest albums. I Didn't Understand? Pitseleh? Sweet Adeline? I don't think a little kid would appreciate it or it care for it too much.

Blain 04-28-2007 11:31 PM

I can hardly be entertained with an Elliott album, yet alone a 6 year old. I apprciate him and realise his talent, but a 6 year old would not.

Beautifully sad, like Romeo and Juliet.
Besides, I'm speaking for me, damn.

sleepy jack 04-29-2007 02:17 AM

I agree with you, I just as blain said don't think it would be what a six year old would like.

Anyway, can people start actually taking this seriously?

I back up the Cure, and would like to add the Smiths to it. Postal Service would be better then Death Cab more clean, though both are pretty non-swearing. I'd check out later Death Cab stuff. I'd go with Rocky too, though probably Makers over Suicide Medicine.

80s pop for the most part is good, the Ramones would be cool. They have a few songs with sketchy themes (Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue, Were A Happy Family) but for the most part they're good. My cousin's daughter is around that age and she really likes them.

Sparky 04-29-2007 12:07 PM

i liked James Brown and Outkast the most when i was 6, try those guys out.
My nephew whos seven really likes Talking Heads and Tv on the Radio too.

brandon24 04-30-2007 11:25 PM

also...

can anyone recommend some music for a 13 year old boy who is angry at the world and likes to smoke cigarettes from time to time? :stupid:

Laces Out Dan! 04-30-2007 11:26 PM
