2! Telegram Sam and Ziggy Stardust by Bauhaus. Blows both original versions out of the water.

Manfred Mann's cover of Springsteen's "Blinded By the Light" is pretty good.

Grand Funk's version of "The Locomotion" is easily the best one.

I've always thought the Beatle's cover of "Rock and Roll Music" is a lot meatier than Chuck Berry's.

Just my opinion.

Probably "Big Yellow Taxi" performed by Counting Crows. Even better than Joni Mitchell's original.

My favourite covers are:
Joe Strummer and the Mescaleroes-Redemption Song (Bob Marley)
AFI-Head Like A Hole (NIN)
The Clash-Brand New Cadilac (Vince Taylor and his Playboys)
Stretch Armstrong-Express Yourself (NWA)
Goldfinger-Rio (Duran Duran)

That has to be the worst cover version of any song in history. Big Country versions of Don't fear the reaper (blue oyster cult) Paranoid (sabbath) Rockin in the free world (Neil Young) Prairie Rose (roxy Music) and the afore mentioned Big Yellow Taxi (Joni Mitchell) seriusly rock.
