I hate to be the one to say it, but that's a pretty disappointing list.

sleepy jack 05-10-2007 04:13 PM

Everyones been saying it, so its fine.

adidasss 05-10-2007 05:01 PM

I think it's a pretty unrealistic one...apart from Elliot Smith which all the emo kids seem to be drooling over....:D

sleepy jack 05-10-2007 05:03 PM

Elliott >:[ two Ts!

Anyway i'll probably redo it later since theres such problems with it, though if elliott and bright eyes get too far again it'll probably just be a repeat of bitching in every poll thread all over.

The Unfan 05-11-2007 12:12 AM

Black Sabbath seem out of place.

Kevorkian Logic 05-11-2007 03:39 PM

Bright Eyes seems really out of place.

This list depresses me.

The Unfan 05-11-2007 08:31 PM

I suppose Black Sabbath and Bowie deserve it for their timeless tunes. The Fall were innovative yet less easy to get into. They might be less deserving but definitely noteworthy. Elliott Smith and Bright Eyes are just well liked by the community so I'm not surprised that they made it, though I'd not hold them so highly myself. Its a slight disappointment but not half as bad as I figured it would turn out.

Frances 05-11-2007 09:07 PM

Woohoo! Bowie's number 2!!

I would have had him at number 1 (and the other 4 wouldn't have made the list) but considering the range of people and tastes that put into this, to have my fave artist at number 2 is pretty damn good. YAY!

:band: :band: :band: :band:

ArtistInTheAmbulance 05-12-2007 04:26 AM

to be honest.. none of you are gonna be perfectly happy with it unless its five artists which appeal to your taste. so less bitching because the whole point is that its everyones taste mixed in. blah.

plus, number one makes me happy :]

so shutup.

sleepy jack 05-12-2007 04:32 AM

I appreciate the unfan and rozi.

Or maybe we would be happy if the polls were more realistic and didn't have Bright Eyes at all :P.

They are.

My opinion is better than everyone else's and this list is crap because it's not what you'd find in a shite magazine it's based off of what people here actually listen to.

Well I don't think so. I mean I hear your argument, but I think the list is disappointing in maybe this reason.

In no particular order:

1. Black Sabbath, for all they created, we're largely one dimensional. I think that for every "changes" there were several "war pigs." not that those weren't great songs, because they were, but Sabbath seemed to like where they were (in my opinion) and stuck there.

2. As much as I think Elliott Smith makes terrible music (to date I like one song), he is well liked and I certainly respect him for bridging what I would call (and therefore not up for debate) the emo kids to singer/songwriters. I feel they have a better chance of developing good taste with smith than they would with whatever trendy, transnational fad group they liked before.*

3. The Fall seems more out of place than the rest. If smith and bright eyes were shoved in my the interest groups of the young, than the Fall got rammed in there by the old (or those who want to seem old of which we have many). I don't know how well The Fall represents MB.

4. Bright Eyes is becoming a great act outside of his insipid fan girl base, and he's losing that ridiculous "whine." I think it shows we have a degree of taste, albeit pretentious and trendy.

5. Bowie speaks for himself.

*Yes I realize that you'd like to argue with this. And the reason is because I tend to make statements based on emotional response and not "fact" (read: prevailing conventional wisdom). Because I don't march in lock step with the cool kids, it would be obvious I'm open to attack with the statements I make. Say what you want, you'll argue with yourself on this one. Welcome to Music Banter, I'm the Big3.

I'd agree with that , I never thought in a million years they'd end up in 4rd place.

(And I didn't actually vote for them in the final round I went with Bowie)

swim 05-12-2007 02:54 PM

I don't know too many people who are avid emo and Elliott Smith fans. I mean um there's Ethan and this kid who sat beside me at For the Kids Fest.

ArtistInTheAmbulance 05-12-2007 06:04 PM

i dont understand why all the analytical hate & disappointment. it was a poll on taste, there's clearly mixed tastes from all over the forums, & elliott happened to be the one to bridge most of the distances & get the most votes. i hate black sabbath with a firey passion but im not gonna stamp my feet & complain, its fine. i geddit. was fun to try :] plus, everyone well got their knickers in a twist over it. was amusing.

TheBig3 05-12-2007 06:12 PM

But you can't really argue that its accurate when the minority acts rallied behind anyone in second place to box out certain acts.

ArtistInTheAmbulance 05-12-2007 06:19 PM

so if there was a way to get people to vote without seeing who was in the lead, you reckon it wouldnta turned out this way?

you confuse me. i voted for who i thought was best, according to taste. if there was someone who hated bowie & voted elliott to spite, then still, they prefer elliott to bowie. which kinda, is the whole point of the poll, right? pick your favourite?

ick. it doesnt all have to be the classics that always win. :/ i liked this. it was fun. & its not like its gonna be taken any further than this site, really.

Urban Hat€monger ? 05-12-2007 06:28 PM

Interesting comparison but if you look at this weeks last FM MB Group you find that the top 5 most listened to are...

1. The Beatles
2. Radiohead
3. The Arcade Fire
=4. Elliott Smith
=4. Bright Eyes

So basically the 2 most disputed bands in this top 5 ARE the most listened to among the 45 members that are in the group. If you want the rest of the list you have to go down to ...

Bowie (18th)
Black Sabbath (32nd)
The Fall (116th)

So it could be argued that it's actually the bands who people think deserved to be in the top 5 that don't deserve it.

Do I? Maybe its the fact that I'm an intellectual super power. My curse is that no one else is, alas. Digression aside...

It would be more far if people voted without seeing who was in the lead.

You had boo boo who voted for the Fall because they beat Led Zep and he said "if you can't beat em, join them" only to later mock the fall. Then you have people who saw that their option would lose, and seeing as they hated the person in first place, the argument was made that they would rather see anyone win that [band in first place].

Its not to hard to note that people who conglomerated behind say "Sabbath" would have voted another way had sabbath not been their only option to unseat, say, Bright eyes.

sleepy jack 05-12-2007 10:54 PM

Elliott/Bright Eyes bitching aside since its going to go on until I promise to remove them and replace them with Zeppelin and the Who..

Anyone else think its pointless to do favorites/best polls since its just going to be repetitive and annoying? I think instead of doing best/favorite album i'll just title it best album and people can vote however the hell they want and all the classic rock fans who bitch about some album from after the 80s winning can get fucked.

TheBig3 05-12-2007 11:12 PM

I swear its a conspiracy by the agenda-driven to drive me crazy...Who is demanding that Zeppelin and the Who get put up there? That would be even worse because the boards would just be the general run of the mill Rolling Stone-approved **** house we all loathe to begin with.

And furthermore, are people "bitching" about Smith/Oberst?

No its not pointless to do polls, in fact I think the board is more lively, people check in more and people generally have more fun when the polls are going on. Not to mention that we get some pretty humerous comments to come out in those late hours of late round polls.

And again, Kashmir and ZeppelinAir left along time ago. Who are these classic rock purists you keep harping about?

sleepy jack 05-12-2007 11:17 PM

Throughout doing the polls people kept complaining when some band like Arcade Fire or something beat some classic rock band like Deep Purple. And yes people have been bitching about Smith/Oberst, just look at the last poll thread to see it. I'm tired of arguing it, its getting ridiculous people just need to accept the fact theirs fans of them on these boards.

And i like doing the polls I don't think they're pointless, I just think doing separate ones for favorite and best is pointless, which is what i was going to do but changed my mind as of now, i'd like other opinions on it though.

A_Perfect_Sonnet 05-12-2007 11:25 PM

We need more good threads and more active members. This board is booooring.

The Darkness need to win the best debut album poll. Seriously.

Frances 05-12-2007 11:44 PM

Bitching? Stop it!
Polls? Keep doing them!

If you re-do this poll in six months, the answers will be different (except for Bowie I hope)

Because as Foxxy Love would say:
"You guys flip flop more than the footwear of the same name."

Yiiiipaah!

TheBig3 05-13-2007 10:07 AM

If we'd all like to take a break from going for everyones throat, let me ask this question:

Do you think the list reflects a low level of diversity. I mean, for all intents those are bands "rock" fans would enjoy. We have no rap in that list, no funk, no reggae, no country, no blues, no jazz, no classical. I mean, its tough to fault anyone, we all put what we liked but I think more scary than the list as a poor representation is that we don't seem to steer out of a handful of genre types.

So we're all clear this wasn't an attack on anything. I'm posing a question. Put your thoughts here provided you didn't imagine that tirade was a clever and thinly veiled attack on your person.

Kevorkian Logic 05-13-2007 11:32 AM

if I remember correctly there weren't many diverse choices.
I remember no jazz, country, classical, or blues (but I doubt if there were they would be chosen)

sleepy jack 05-13-2007 02:55 PM

There wasn't any because no one nominated any.

TheBig3 05-13-2007 03:29 PM

I said that.

I'm saying thats a tad bit more disheartening than the list we did pick.

cardboard adolescent 05-13-2007 04:37 PM

I thought Parliament/Funkadelic was on it for a while...

swim 05-13-2007 04:51 PM

It's not that nobody here likes bands from those genres it's just that people wouldn't put them in their top 5 favorite.

TheBig3 05-13-2007 07:06 PM

/\ Right, thats my concern. We seem to be a streamlined music message board.

Am I not coming across correctly?

riseagainstrocks 05-13-2007 07:30 PM

I like 5-6 Black Sabbath songs. Cool.

Just because the forum's called 'Musicbanter', which is a pretty all-encompassing name in terms of music, that doesn't mean that all types of music have to be given an equal amount of attention. Sure, some people might truly like listening to a wide variety of music with no real bias towards a certain genre but the reality of most Musicbanter users is that they do tend to listen to a lot more guitar band music and spend most of their time discussing those styles of music.

We ARE a streamlined message board and I think that's quite a good thing. It gives the site some kind of direction and means that people are having arguments about topics which most of them know at least a bit about.

Also, it could mean there's the opportunity to 'educate' people about other very different types of music, although so far I don't think this has happened very much.

A_Perfect_Sonnet 05-16-2007 09:58 AM

On the topic, I'd like everyone to seriously consider listening to Bluegrass. It's what country would be if country were good.w

Continental Divide is a good start:

It's not bad, but I'm disagreeing with your opinion if this is the generic bluegrass band.
