best artist at each genre

lets try and compile a list of the best artist for each genre. i dont like to classify artist in genre, but because it is to hard to compare apples to oranges lets try this. comparing copy and paste and either add to or edit this list.

blues - bb king
classical - beethoven
country - johnny cash
electronica - daft punk
folk - bob dylan
guitar - SRV
alternative/grunge - pearl jam
metal - metallica
pop - elvis pressely
psychedelic - pink floyd
punk - the ramones (i say velvet underground... but i dont think everyone would agree they are punk)
raggae - bob marley
rap - wu tang clan
rock - the rolling stones

its not that the beatles dont deserve to be the best of their genre... they just kind of covered so many genres that it is hard to tie them to one.

alot of these might also come of as being obvious because they started/popularized that style of music... but usually if you make a sound that is beautiful enough for people to try and imitate, then there is a good chance you were probably the best at making that sound.

MHDTV 07-27-2007 04:32 PM

Corrections: Biggie>Wu Tang Clan
Pink Floyd only released one Psychedelic album, so...Pink floyd>The Rolling Stones
Blues: Eric Clapton>B.B. King
Pop: I'll say the Beatles, just to fit them in, and Elvis belongs nowhere near any best-of list.

joyboyo53 07-27-2007 04:43 PM

^ he is not my favorite either (elvis)... but as far as other people, well they seem to really love him. like i have said before, whenever i make lists i try my best to exclude my personal opinion.

as far as pink floyd goes, they are most assuradly physcadelic space rock beyond just piper at the gates of dawn. how could you say that dark side of the moon (among others) doesnt fall in that category?

Urban Hat€monger ? 07-27-2007 05:30 PM

Blues - Muddy Waters
Country - johnny cash
Electronica - Brian Eno
Folk - Fairport Convention
Guitar - Jimi Hendrix
Metal - Celtic Frost
Pop - The Kinks
Psychedelic - 13th Floor Elevators / Hawkwind (Can't decide between these)
Punk - The Clash
Reggae - Lee Scratch Perry
Rap - De La Soul
Rock - Motorhead

And i'll throw in The Fall for best post punk act.

Oops, lol. The only part of rap I enjoy is the beats, so maybe that's it. To jdg85, I would consider most of Pink Floyd's pop influenced prog.

Many corrections to be made.

1. Pink Floyd had two psychedelic albums. Saucerful of Secrets is very much in the same vein as Piper.
2. If you think The Stones are a better psychedelic band you're completely out of it.
3. Not to mention they only had one psychedelic album in their whole carreer. Her Majesties Satanic Request, and it was mediocre.

MHDTV 07-27-2007 06:31 PM

Damn it, I messed up those thingies again! <>><

Rubbish ,It's not great but it's nowhere near the abomination you are making it out to be.
Plus bands like Echo & The Bunnymen , Primal Scream and others have claimed that the Stones version of psychadelia was much more of an influence than that of Pink Floyd or The Beatles.
If Brian Jones had got his way the Stones would have done a lot more of this stuff a lot sooner than they actually did.

i get high sometimes 07-27-2007 06:43 PM

how did he make it out to be an abomination? he said it was mediocre.

It probably dosen't help that Pink Floyd and The Beatles >>>>>>>>>> Primal Scream and Echo & The Bunnymen.

Urban Hat€monger ? 07-27-2007 06:47 PM

By what he has said about before in past threads

boo boo 07-27-2007 06:48 PM

And that matters how exactly?

boo boo 07-27-2007 06:51 PM

What significance does The Stones influencing Primal Scream have to do with weither or not Floyd are a better psychedelic rock act?

Theres traces of Pscyhedelia is all of Floyds albums, as opposed to The Stones, who dropped the sound almost instantly after they adopted it.

Where did I say anything about anybody being a better psychadelic band than another? The point I was making was that there are some successful artists in their own right that have used it as an influence and that while not being one of the stones greatest albums it's certainly not a total dud.

Like I already explained to you , it was Brian Jones who wanted to do it and had been on at the band to try it for a while. And it's a bit hard to write material when your dead.

Woody Guthrie should replace Bob Dylan.

Music Man 07-28-2007 03:05 AM

Is there a particular reason that jazz wasn't included in the genre list?

I just love all these sub genres. Reminds me of late 80's metal.

THRASH
SPEED
DEATH
DOOM

blah blah blah

sleepy jack 07-28-2007 08:16 PM

The difference being that metal sucks and punk does not.

swim 07-28-2007 08:22 PM

I think all the hardcore subsects aren't ridiculous. There's a clear difference.

boo boo 07-28-2007 09:18 PM

Indiemo?

Could anything sound more unappealing to me?

i get high sometimes 07-28-2007 09:19 PM

oh yeah mods cant have strong opinions. theyre supposed to be bland rule enforcers.

boo boo 07-28-2007 09:21 PM

That wasn't his opinion. He just wants to start crap with metalheads.

i get high sometimes 07-28-2007 09:22 PM

i dunno, i think you should just take things for what they are. he thinks metal sucks, apparently. thats alright with you isnt it?

tdoc210 07-28-2007 09:24 PM

lol@you saying crowquill shouldnt be mod for being a troll then posting **** like that

sleepy jack 07-28-2007 09:26 PM

I hate metal and always have, anyone on here who knows me well enough (swimintheundertow, lespaul43) knows I actually do think that and i'm not just trying to "troll".

boo boo 07-28-2007 09:26 PM

I'm not a metalhead, So that aint it.

But I know for a fact that Ethan does it for the sake of starting a ruckus rather than constructive criticism.

**** like what?

Not that it matters.

The difference is I'm not a mod. That why I'm not a mod nor will I ever be a mod nor do I want to be a mod.

Ethan shouldn't be a mod.

sleepy jack 07-28-2007 09:30 PM

I wish mods were allowed to be not serious every once in awhile.

boo boo 07-28-2007 09:31 PM

When are you ever serious?

All you do is bait and make wisecracks. I don't mean as in most of the time, but all of the time.

sleepy jack 07-28-2007 09:47 PM

Why don't you confine your crap to just one thread instead of making a go at me in every other thread? I can't believe you think I don't contribute do I need to wave my threads in your face for you to realize I actually do more then 'bait and make wisecracks.' Because it seems like all you do is go at my bad posts and ignore anything positive I have to say and pretend it doesn't exist.

Lets look at some popular threads i've made:
http://www.musicbanter.com/general-m...sts-bands.html
http://www.musicbanter.com/general-m...ame-thing.html
http://www.musicbanter.com/general-m...my-albums.html
http://www.musicbanter.com/general-m...right-now.html

And all the bands thread i've made, (and theres much more then this just look at the threads i've made most of them are band threads. I'm just pulling some up so you can't say they don't exist.)
Elliott Smith (not an obscure artist but I worked typing all that up with AITA)
http://www.musicbanter.com/indie-alt...m-eat-him.html
http://www.musicbanter.com/indie-alt...n-trapper.html
http://www.musicbanter.com/hardcore-...ral-diner.html
http://www.musicbanter.com/indie-alt...8-belaire.html
http://www.musicbanter.com/folk/2327...oks-hands.html
http://www.musicbanter.com/electroni...president.html
http://www.musicbanter.com/rock-meta...lour-fire.html
http://www.musicbanter.com/indie-alt...-collapse.html
http://www.musicbanter.com/indie-alt...ing-ships.html
http://www.musicbanter.com/folk/23611-seabear.html
http://www.musicbanter.com/folk/23279-fruit-bats.html
http://www.musicbanter.com/indie-alt...cant-swim.html

Then theres the emo education thread too, I spent awhile typing that up and then revising later, and i'm still not done. I don't think I need to add more, except for this one thing. What about the polls? Have those been me trying to 'bait' people? No, I realize no one appreciated the winners of the last one and i'm taking a week break from the debut albums poll to get use to being back home, but just because neither is going on now doesn't mean they didn't happen and aren't going to. I worked hard on those things and don't get much thanks for it. I don't complain because I don't care if people don't go 'good job', but if you're going to attack me for not contributing at all at least point out that one thing that I did, instead of ignoring everything i've done.

Thats all i'm going to say about all this demod Crowquill stuff, because this whole disillusion that I don't contribute sort of bothers me. Its kind of disheartening when most of my band/artists threads get ignored and I don't get much thanks for all the uploads, or posts, or all i've done for the songwriting forum, do I complain? No, (except for now) I don't complain because it doesn't bother me, but it does bother me when i'm told all I do is troll and flame and I havn't contributed at all, because I have.
