Fiona Apple is an underrated songwriter. She is one of the best songwriters of the last 25 years

Not a big fan of Green day but this is true i remember Green day being the alternative to all the seattle grunge practically everybody i knew had the dookie cd

Nowadays i don't like Green Day they still sound somewhat good but way more generic and radio friendly

Green Day early releases on Lookout! records are good pop-punk records but there were many other good (and better) bands in the same genre and on the same label at this time.

Crimpshrine is underrated.

I really did not know much about her until her recent "Idler Wheel" album lol She is a really good performer. I really want to see her live.
Her writing is poetry. I really like Werewolf, Anything We Want, and Every Single Night. I think she is a good singer to, I just love her lol

Perhaps, they have been around far longer than I realized. I have only heard their half hour album 'breakup songs' that came out two years back.
I remember describing it to my friend as
"imagine if Death Grips were an indie pop band"
Obviously I had not had much experience with noise rock or the type of chaotic, all-over-the-place music they embodied but I remember thinking I hadn't heard much about it.

On the other hand, when Pitchfork dubs a group 'the best band ever' you have to wonder if they have any qualities that could be considered 'underrated'
i'm sure within the genre, they're one of the pioneers and fans of noise rock I'm sure wouldn't say their contributions had gone unnoticed.

I have never listened carefully Deerhoof but I like them just because they played a show in Japan with Shiritsu Ebisu Chuugaku, a typical japanese idol unit :

At least one of Deerhoof member is a fan of these young girls apparently.

@Manky

Same as me i thought they were a new band but it turns out they've been playing forever and have made alot of Cds most of the independently i think and yea they do get their fair credit but they are still not a band known by many ppl which is why i consider them underrated

even here in MB the Deerhoof thread doesn't get alot of love.

But aren't those groups basically fabricated by record companies? i heard that's how they do it there..

Yes, idol units are products. The girls are employed by talent companies from an early age and the 'best' of them get to be part of a group. Most of the units don't ever get really popular.

Anyway, the company who created Shiritsu Ebisu Chuugaku also created Momoiro Clover Z and Team Syachihoko and managed to bring interesting music elements to their units (which was not the case for bigger companies who just related on young cute girls to sell records and magazines).

If you can get through the silly image and the overall cuteness which can be disturbing, some songs are really well-crafted infectious pop tunes.
