I like the Monks, but I think the Sonics are just okay. The Sonics just took rock & roll classics and added a bit of a garage rock sound to them. The Monks, on the other hand, had to go to Germany just to record their songs because they were too controversial at the time. Not to mention all of the songs on their debut (and only album) were songs written by themselves, while the majority of the songs on Here Are the Sonics!!! were written by other artists.

I thought they were all just military dudes who were already stationed there.

Oh, you're right. Where the hell did I get that information from...?

Edit: Never mind...

"NO-ONE ever came up with a whole album of such dementia. The Monks' Black Monk Time is a gem born of isolation and the horrible deep-down knowledge that no-one is really listening to what your [sic] saying. And the Monks took full artistic advantage of their lucky/unlucky position as American rockers in a country that was desperate for the real thing. They wrote songs that would have been horribly mutilated by arrangers and producers had they been back in America. But there was no need for them to clean up their act, as the Beatles and others had had to do on returning home, for there were no artistic constraints in a country that liked the sound of beat music but had no idea about its lyric content"

Wikipedia saves the day again.

True to an extent... I have to say though, I think The Sonics were fantastic at what they did. As songwriters, fair enough - they did do a lot of covers. But I enjoy the songs they did write, and I think their sound has a really great edge and great vibe to it. Really fun, and soulful as well. But to each their own.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy their songs, I just think that saying the they were better than the Monks isn't all that true. But I guess it's just a matter of opinion.

In the 2000s alone there's many I'd list as overrated, most of the music I like is probably less hyped. So overrated....

Bon Ivor
Animal Collective
Grizzly Bear
The National
Arctic Monkeys
The Strokes
Modest Mouse
Vampire Weekend
Arcade Fire
Death Cab for Cutie
MGMT
TV on the Radio
Coldplay
LCD Soundsystem
Kanye West
The Tallest Man on Earth

Would be many more, critics are awful much of the time it feels.

The one I take the most issue with on that list is Grizzly Bear.

I've just preferred others to them like Fleet Foxes, Local Natives, Great Lake Swimmers to name 3 examples. The sound/production is impressive by them but the melodies less so to me.

They did some great songs, though I'm still not sure the album they did is completely consistent all the way through.
