How 'mainstream' are you?

It's pretty lame and generalised, but kinda interesting. Put your Last.FM username in and fire away.

Click!

I'm 37.19% mainstream.

Sound Devastation 10-07-2007 08:12 AM

last time i did this i was 2.6%... will be higher now though, my boyfriend keeps listening to Between the Buried and Me!

The Dave 10-07-2007 09:06 AM

I was like 40 %, but i dont think its a bad thing, i like alota the music.

jackhammer 10-07-2007 11:28 AM

When I get a link then I can find out. I should imagine that I am mainstream, but according to whose rules? To the average Joe on the street I am most certainly not mainstream.

Kevorkian Logic 10-07-2007 12:15 PM

Crap, sorry I forgot to post a link... I'll edit

jackhammer 10-07-2007 12:25 PM

7.53% mainstream. I though I would have been more. Chuffed!

The Dave 10-07-2007 12:43 PM

19.53% for me, due to Bright Eyes, Nick Drake, Of Montreal, Pavement and Neutral Milk Hotel, but I wouldn't really consider those mainstream, maybe Bright Eyes, but that would be it.

acratertocoffin 10-07-2007 01:11 PM

13.51 % mainstream

I was 5% last time I took this, and Elliott Smith wasn't my number 1 artist at that time.

CAPTAIN CAVEMAN 10-07-2007 01:38 PM

2.70 % mainstream
highest is The Blood Brothers at 3 w/ 14.12%, lowest is Hats Off, Gentlemen at 11 w/ 0.00%

By lastfm standards, which means Radiohead is the most mainstream band ever. So keep that in mind.

=ladyface= 10-07-2007 03:26 PM

This thing tells me that I'm 18.98% 'mainstream'. I was actually expecting something far higher than that.

they're so obscure they dont add anything to the mainstream percentage. good band though :D

Dr_Rez 10-07-2007 05:11 PM

This test suxs for me, because the RHCP are like 105% mainstream now. So i get walloped

sleepy jack 10-07-2007 05:13 PM

6.23% my highest being the Beatles my lowest being Owen.

jackhammer 10-07-2007 05:18 PM

Is this affiliated by last FM though? And who says what percentage is correct? There is no fúcking formula. If anyone has a couple of beatles tracks in their liste , then we fail? My music tastes are one of the most eclectic on here, BUT many members listen to a lot more obscure stuff than me, albeit within a specified genre.

Mainstream? I still think I am mainstream.

sleepy jack 10-07-2007 05:23 PM

Last.fm has linked it fairly frequent, it's accurate. They judge it by your top 15 artists, how much their listened to on lastfm and then they calculate it. It's not really a mainstream-o-meter, more a comparison to last.fm as a wholes taste. For instance if you listened to metal, very mainstream metal like Iron Maiden and Metallica you'd be placed a good deal lower than an alternative fan who listened to Radiohead and Muse. Fans of Britney Spears and such would be very not-mainstream according to this.

jackhammer 10-07-2007 05:28 PM

I know the formula, BUT WHO DECIDES WHAT IS MAINSTREAM? that is my question. Crowquill-you for example listen to a lot of artists I don't know and are knowledgeable about them. Yet my tastes are hugely varied to yours and by that equation, my tastes are just as less mainstream as yours!. I just detest the fact that there is an all deciding monitor of music tastes.

sleepy jack 10-07-2007 05:32 PM

As I said, the mainstreamness of something is decided by how much it is listened to on last.fm. For instance, Radiohead is the most popular band on last.fm therefore in the last.fm world they're the most mainstream.

jackhammer 10-07-2007 05:35 PM

OK im still less than 10%-i pwn lol.

I don't think these things are supposed to be taken entirely seriously, though.

jackhammer 10-07-2007 05:50 PM

I know, you are still my fave new poster!

=ladyface= 10-07-2007 05:55 PM

Is that because I'm the only new poster on right now? :p:

Top LastFM artists the past week. Weird.

jackhammer 10-07-2007 05:58 PM

Her? I'm male FFS.

ProggyMan 10-07-2007 06:05 PM

I meant your granddaughter.

swim 10-07-2007 06:08 PM

3.64 % mainstream wow i'm cool........

Urban Hat€monger ? 10-07-2007 06:20 PM

It's all very well taking into account my top 15 artists but it doesn't take into account the other 485 more obscure ones I have below it.

Exactly. Having the Porcupine Tree, Beatles, RHCP, Radiohead and David Bowie in my top 15 basically destroys any chance of being non-mainstream. Looking at my top 50 bands isn't enough to represent my music taste, let alone my top 15.

One of my less mainstream bands I like is Miners of Moria with 4 listeners.

Expletive Deleted 10-07-2007 09:45 PM

22.49%, highest was Daft Punk (52.86%), lowest was Drop the Lime (0.77%).

Last week alone I was 6.98% mainstream, highest was Air (59.55%), lowest was Bangers & Cash (0.05%).

sleepy jack 10-07-2007 09:58 PM

Musicbanter as a group is: 53.21%

Damn we're a bunch of hip cats. Highest is Radiohead, lowest is Dinosaur Jr.

ProggyMan 10-07-2007 10:00 PM

The thing is, the site composed mainly of people more into music than your average Joe, so mainstream is very different.

DearJenny 10-07-2007 10:43 PM

26.56% mainstream

Top being the Arcade Fire @ 57.99%
Lowest being Ashes of Soma @ .12%

hookers with machineguns 10-07-2007 11:44 PM

12.22% for top 15 artists.

True. In the real world I'm surrounded by people who listen to music that makes it into the charts and little else. These people tend not to use the site. On last.fm bands that have little or no success in the UK are high in the user charts and so all of the fashionable self-proclaimed indie kids get sad because they're not as special as they once thought.

Mouseketeer 10-08-2007 11:30 AM

I think it's interesting seeing how much people care about being 'mainstream' and how much of a blow to their egos it is if they are. You like your music, if it's 'mainstream' according to Last.FM who gives a crap? It's just interesting to see how many people listen to your music too.

=ladyface= 10-08-2007 11:34 AM

Indeed. And it's interesting to work out which of your friends would want to use the site based on the type of music that the majority of its users listen to. :p:

ProggyMan 10-08-2007 11:35 AM

According to LastFM I'm more mainstream than a bunch of my friends.
