33. The Microphones "The Glow Pt. II"
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/a...00/theglow.jpg

The album opens with two acoustic guitars picking a simple line, and then the vocals come in, followed by drums, and then a fuzzy guitar jumps in the mix too. The album moves gracefully and builds with an equal agility never once tripping over its own feet, in other words the transitions are perfect and it adds alot to the album. If they weren't perfect I don't think that album would move the way it does, like a dancer. One song slowly dipping into the next until before you know it the album is over.

Something that needs its own attention on this album are the lyrics. Phil Elvrum is a spectacular write. So i'll quote my favorite verses.

Oh what a loss
My soft hands replaced by claws
You turned me into a stray dog, from mighty human man
Oh what a loss
Oh what a loss
I miss my closest friend
And now I cling to rocks and wind
It's a precious thing we lost

You tore a hole so deep my leak poured out torrentially
But now I'm bored
My bloody flow is slowed so I can be bored near you
Oh, what a loss
It didn't show its head until mine was torn and thrown at you
And back it grew
With glassy eyes locked in contact on the couch with you
Oh, boring face
We're losing touch I reached and my extended hand went through
Now we both know what we have to do

We found a precious place in the sand right out in the wind
And we laid under a blanket and heard the furious sound
The roar of waves, the pounding surf, two bodies on the earth
It was intense just getting to be there next to you
And you trying to get me then, and I was happy to let you in.

This album is one of the most beautiful and best indie-folk albums ever. All the acoustic guitars, the spectacular drumming, the fuzzy production, childlike production and breathtaking lyrics. It takes you on a trip, sometimes soft, sometimes loud but always intense and riddled with themes of life and death, the wilderness and the human body.

32. Emily Haines & The Soft Skeleton "Knives Don't Have Your Back"
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/a...veyourback.jpg
"When I was a little kid…I would creep downstairs to the piano and write rudimentary songs about imaginary places. I’m told the first song I ever wrote was a love song to a cranberry tree. I always used the mute pedal. I hated the idea of anybody hearing me. Everywhere I’ve lived while working with Metric, I’ve written songs on the piano and played them for no one. On the advice of a friend, I decided I’d better start recording them before they were forgotten. Four meandering years later I ended up with this collection of songs featuring a few of my favorite people, a group I call The Soft Skeleton."
Emily Haines's side project, which is primarily a solo project is (in my opinion) much better than Metric. The songs have a very soulful feel to them, dealing with loneliness, drugs and sexual suicide this release is enchanting. Her music is similar to Ben Folds but not as upbeat, more similar to Nick Drake and with a whispery voice akin to Elliott Smith. The mood of these songs is kind of a drink in the hand, sitting in the dark contemplative sort of mood. While in the corner a somber voice belts out lines like "Cursed with a love that you can't express / It's not for a fuck, or a kiss / Rather give the world away than wake up lonely."

31. The Shins "Oh, Inverted World"
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/a...ertedworld.jpg

Ah what to say about the Shins. My love for them has only become huge recently mostly attributed to long walks around town with a camera and listening to New Slang on repeat. In alot of ways the Shins are one of the most essential Northwest indie bands, you can hear the climate and mood deeply embedded in their sound, from the lyrics dealing with small towns to the very oceanesque influence they seem to have which echoes Brian Wilson except with a much much somber mood. while the Wilson was all about girls, surfing and California the Shins were more about getting away and the dark and rocky coasts of Washington and Oregon.

30. Eels "Beautiful Freak"
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/a...tifulfreak.jpg

This album had me from hello, it sounded like a ballerina music box then all the sudden you hear "Life is hard and so am I / You better give me something / So I don't die" then theres a crazy guitar riff and it sucks you in to a slightly sad world and something, something, someone fetch me a book of lame puns and good closing jokes. =(

29. Bob Dylan "Blonde on Blonde"

28. Man Man "Six Demon Bag"
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/a...ixdemonbag.jpg

So the crazy carnival side of Tom Waits and Captain Beefheart made a baby and called it Man Man and they made it listen to the Fiery Furnaces alot. This four headed, eight armed and eight legged baby Man Man decided to record an album and called it Six Demon Bag with drunken and pissed lyrics, circus sounds and funny voices Six Demon Bag proved to be awesome, that is all I have to say.

26. Andrew Bird "Armchair Apocrpyha"

Andrew Bird like Ellliott Smith (<3) has carved his own nitch in indie-folk, with the violins, whistling and pretty melodies he's like that warm lover you always wanted. I am in such a terriblly lazy writing mood tonight haha.

25. Art Brut "Bang Bang Rock and Roll"
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/a...ockandroll.jpg

Art Brut is possibly the greatest rock and roll band ever, with their witty ironic lyrics and loud proto-punk sound. They're one of the few bands that I can always count on to put a smile on my face (IVE SEEN HER NAKED, TWICE!) and in general put me in a good mood, if I ever throw a party GUESS WHATS PLAYING? That's right, motherfucking Art Brut. I really don't understand why so many people hate them either with lyrics like "Bang, bang, rock and roll / I can't stand the sound of the Velvet Underground" whats to hate? Seriously?

The new Clash documentary is just basically a Joe Strummer circle-jerk.

Thats probably because it's a Joe Strummer documentary.

Seeing as Mick Jones wrote all their music (as pointed out) and their music is still treasured today it's safe to say people care about those "other guys."

All bands are just either the singer/guitarist/lyricist/composer/producer/cute one and a bunch of other guys... no matter how 'loved' their work is

Joe Strummer gets all of the attention, so Joe Strummer basically IS The Clash. All of the other members could be replaced, and a majority of the listeners would not care.

Every bandmate in any band has a vital role, however, only the frontman gets all of the credit. It's not fair, but who really cares? It should be about the music.

When I talk about things, I usually refer to the popular view. Avid fans of the band will know everything their is to know about them, but the 'casual' listener won't care enough to.

That film was liked by fans (probably because it was mostly a live show compilation), but the Joe-Strummer-is-god one is getting a lot more attention. I actually assume all of this Clash media hype is due to all of the hot-topic kiddies getting a hold of their albums (same with the Ramones).

Mick Jones had more 'mainstream' success with Big Audio Dynamite than the Clash and Strummer ever had.

Or it could be because they made good records that stand the test of time & still mean something. I've never been anywhere near a hot topic and I like them and they spilt up long before I was aware of them.

24. Pixies "Doolittle"
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/a.../doolittle.jpg

I don't know what to say about this album since it's considered such a classic and all. For some reason i'd always associated it with the crappy music coming out of Seattle in the 90s I always avoided it but when I heard it on the advice I was blown away by the backing vocals, surfish guitar, bizarre lyrics and raw vocals. I fell in love and it was beautiful.

23. The Flaming Lips "The Soft Bulletin"
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/a...ftbulletin.jpg

The Flaming Lips were one of the oddest bands i'd ever fallen in love with when I heard them. They really stood out as a black sheep in my CD collection for awhile, you had a bunch of Nick Drakes and Elliott Smiths and then the Flaming Lips.

I hadn't checked out the Soft Bulletin until a month or two back, but i'd love Yoshimi to death and I decided sometimes you needed to stop raping one particular album. When I heard the Soft Bulletin I was shocked because it was much more, appealing to me storywise and mood wise and i'd found myself liking it alot more then Yoshimi. Now I think i'm going to end up raping this album to death so onto At War with the Mystics or Zaireeka I suppose. =x
