The Crowquill 100
100. Archers of Loaf "Icky Mettle"
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/a...ickymettle.jpg 90s indie grungeish album that reminds me of Pavement and Dinosaur Jr, with its silly lyrics and catchy hooks. Jesse Lacey once said this album restorted his faith in music. Favorite Song: Web In Front MySpace.com - Archers of Loaf - CHAPEL HILL, North Carolina - Indie / Alternative / Rock - www.myspace.com/archersofloaf 99. Red House Painters "Song For A Blue Guitar" http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/a...blueguitar.jpg Mark Kozelek has a way with covers. He covers Wings "Silly Love Songs", The Cars "All Mixed Up" and finally "Long Distance Runaround" by Yes. Now I don't care for any of the originals, in fact I despise Yes. But he covers them amazing making them songs i'd actually want to listen to, turning them into Nick Drake-esque songs. But covers aside, the originals are also beautiful songs in the same vein. Favorite song: Song For a Blue Guitar MySpace.com - Red House Painters - NEW YORK, New York - Folk / Pop / Rock - www.myspace.com/redhousepaintersmusic 98. This Will Destroy You "Young Mountain EP" http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/a...ngmountain.jpg Post-rock band similar to Explosions in the Sky (like that hasn't been heard before), which isn't a bad thing at all. They're more easy to get into because they're less subtle and don't spend as much time building up to lead to the breakdowns, listening to this EP never fails to make me eager for their debut album to be released. Favorite Song: Quiet MySpace.com - this will destroy you - SAN MARCOS, TEXAS - Ambient / Rock / Thrash - www.myspace.com/thiswilldestroyyou 97. Library Tapes "Feelings For Something Lost" http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/a...ethinglost.jpg Somewhere between minimalism and post-rock. This album is based around repeated piano noises and background sounds, it's ambient. Favorite Song: Shut Your Eyes and You’ll Find the Trees Turning Into Flames MySpace.com - library tapes - Gävle - Classical / Experimental / Ambient - www.myspace.com/librarytapes |
I cannot do a top 100 @ 35, but good luck Ethan!
|
For the 4th try now eh? :p
Red House Painters great, everyone should check them out. |
I used really like Archers of Loaf. They deserve to be before Lullatone at least.
But good luck on doing this. I wouldn't have the tenacity to finish it. |
I had to re-order it slightly because I had 105 albums instead of 100, it's sorted out now though.

96. Youth Pictures Of Florence Henderson "Unnoticable In A Tiny Town, Invisible In The City"
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/a...noticeable.jpg Norwegian post-rock bands one and only album, similar to other post-rock bands such as Mogwai with a Notwist thing going on. Favorite Song: Van Gogh Kept Painting Himself Because He Was The Only Model He Had MySpace.com - Youth Pictures of Florence Henderson - North - Indie / Emo / Electronica - www.myspace.com/youthpictures 95. Earlimart "Treble & Tremble" http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/a...andtremble.jpg Earlimart stray away from their more punk driven sound to dive more into the realm of shoegaze. Essentially it sounds like Slowdive meets Grandaddy, with dreamy melodies and airy vocals, it may be nothing special but that doesn't make it any less beautiful. Favorite Song: Hold On, Slow Down MySpace.com - Earlimart - LOS ANGELES - Rock / Indie / 2-step - www.myspace.com/earlimart 94. Say Anything "...Is A Real Boy" http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/a...isarealboy.jpg Now singer/songwriter Max Bemis is a completely hypocritical asshole, but if you shove his personality aside he does make good music and write great lyrics. ...Is a Real Boy is a pop-punk/rock album that once you get into it's hard to get out of. Favorite Song: Woe MySpace.com - Say Anything - LOS ANGELES - Indie / Rock - www.myspace.com/sayanything 93. Beach House "Beach House" http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/a...beachhouse.jpg Beach House are dreamy, melancholic and true to their name. For some reason this band always conjures of images of slowly driving along the coast and wrapped up in a warm blanket. At times it can be a bit boring but for the most part its just comfortable, and done purely for the most easy listening possible, which isn't a bad thing. Favorite Song: Masters of None MySpace.com - Beach House - BALTIMORE, Maryland - Visual / Visual / Visual - www.myspace.com/beachhousemusic |
92. The Boy Least Likely To "The Best Party Ever"
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/a...p100/party.jpg "If all your childhood stuffed animals got together and started a band, it might sound like the boy least likely to" - rolling stone magazine and for once, they're right though there's no might about it. Favorite song: Be Gentle With Me MySpace.com - the boy least likely to - Alternative / Pop / Country - www.myspace.com/theboyleastlikelytouk 91. Do Make Say Think "You, You're A History In Rust" http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/a...toryinrust.jpg This album always stuck me as a weird post-rock album, not just because of the vocals which seem to be rare amongst post-rock bands. But for presenting a more wooden sound. The folk influences are quickly made apparent on the opening track Bound To Be That Way and the banjo that appears throughout the album is excellently placed. Favorite song: A With Living MySpace.com - Do Make Say Think - Toronto, CA - Grunge / Psychobilly / Southern Rock - www.myspace.com/doomachesatan 90. Rilo Kiley "Take Offs and Landings" http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/a...ndlandings.jpg This is my favorite Rilo Kiley album, maybe because i've always preferred Blake's singing to Jenny's, I don't know. I think its their most charming album because its not fully polished and still shows a more amateur side to them then before but still manages to be a very good release. Other then August my favorite songs are Salute My Shorts, Science Vs. Romance, Bulletproof, Wire and Waves and Small Figures in a Vast Expanse. Favorite Song: August MySpace.com - Rilo Kiley - LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - Indie / Rock / Alternative - www.myspace.com/rilokiley 89. Idiot Pilot "Strange We Should Meet Here" http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/a...geweshould.jpg When I first heard about them I was apprehensive to check them out. I was told they were two eighteen year olds who were the hardcore version of radiohead. Upon listening I was shocked that it was good, a very nice blend of modern post-hardcore, pop and electronic. Though the vocals are obviously similar to Yorke its not in the "My name is Matt Bellamy, i'm a faggot" way. Favorite Song: Arrhythmia MySpace.com - Idiot Pilot - BELLINGHAM, US - Electronica / Alternative - www.myspace.com/idiotpilot |

88. Simon Joyner "Skeleton Blues"
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/a...letonblues.jpg I feel bad comparing Simon Joyner to earlier Bright Eyes. since Simon Joyner was Conors biggest influence, but since early Bright Eyes took alot of elements from Joyners music it works. At times his voice reminds me of Dylan, it sounds nothing like Dylan, but in the way he sings its very dylanesque and the level of realness in which he delivers his lyrics. Favorite Song: The Only Living Boy In Omaha MySpace.com - Simon Joyner - Omaha, US - Folk Rock / Indie / Acoustic - www.myspace.com/simonjoyner 87. Joan of Arc "So Much Staying Alive and Loveless" http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/a...ayingalive.jpg From the ashes of one of the most influential, if not most influential post-emo band Cap'n Jazz arose Joan Of Arc. Fronted by Tim Kinsella, who is the only consistent member of Joan Of Arc they create experimental music, its kind of hard to place because its all over the place and weird from the time signatures to the lyrics. I mean how many songwriters write lines like "We all thought it was great when a silly art student Hitler had to change a flat tire on that bedsheet in the breeze on the roof."? Very few. I think this probably the most important Kinsella band, even if its not the most popular and its certainly the most progressive. Favorite Song: On a Bedsheet in the Breeze On the Roof MySpace 86. Sunset Rubdown "Shut Up I Am Dreaming" http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/a...amdreaming.jpg Sunset Rubdown is better than Wolf Parade, now that i've got that out of the way. I think this is a well crafted fuzzy album that shows how variable Krug Is, from the irishness of They Took a Vote and Said No to the slow and beautiful Us Ones in Between. Favorite Song: Shut Up I Am Dreaming of Places Where Lovers Have Wings MySpace 85. The New Pornographers "Mass Romantic" http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/a...ssromantic.jpg This is my favorite New Pornographers album, I don't know why but i've never liked Twin Cinema as much though its considered by most people to be their best but I like this one better. I really don't need to say much about them. Favorite Song: Mass Romantic MySpace.com - The New Pornographers - Vancouver, British Columbia - Indie / Rock / Powerpop - www.myspace.com/thenewpornographers |
84. Architecture In Helsinki "In Case We Die"
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/a...ncasewedie.jpg A spontaneous, poppy and at the same time kind of dark pop album. Architecture In Helsinki have an interesting sound, they're most comparable to i'd say Of Montreal but thats a very loose comparison since Of Montreal can be all over the map and even at their most similar, its not too similar. In Case We Die is a weird album, it can be so happy and melancholy at the same time. Favorite Song: Do The Whirlwind MySpace.com - Architecture in Helsinki - The Sphinx, EG - Melodramatic Popular Song / Ghettotech / Jungle - www.myspace.com/aihmusic 83. Laura "Radio Swan Is Down" http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/a...swanisdown.jpg A very heavy album and very ambient. Laura manage to create songs that just flow and crash, the sound they create is consuming and oddly cold, they share more in common with post-rock bands like 65daysofstatic then Explosions in the Sky. Favorite Song: I Hope MySpace.com - laura - currently located in melbourne - Alternative / Rock / Experimental - www.myspace.com/lauranoise 82. Gregory And The Hawk "The Boats and Birds "EP" http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/a...atandbirds.jpg This song always give me a high school girl with an acoustic guitar vibe on the acoustic tracks like, Boats & Birds and A Wish. Her voice sounds cute even while singing painfully direct lyrics like "I wish to feel smaller under your hands / Though you seem satisfied as you slip mine down your pants / And I'm thinking about how you care half as much for me / While you lift up my shirt after asking politely." Favorite song: A Wish MySpace.com - Gregory and the Hawk - New York - Indie / Acoustic / Pop - www.myspace.com/gregoryandthehawk 81. The Decemberists "Castways And Cutouts" http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/a...andcutouts.jpg Pirate folk band the Decemberists (thats what genre they are as of now)'s debut is my favorite by them. They're pretty popular now, being sold at starbucks and stuff so I don't need to talk much about this I guess. Favorite Song: Odalisque MySpace.com - The Decemberists - PORTLAND, US - Folk Rock / Indie - www.myspace.com/thedecemberists |
Laura is amazing.

80. Death Cab For Cutie "Transatlanticism"
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/a...tlanticism.jpg This is my favorite Death Cab album because it holds all my favorite songs, The Sound Of Settling, Transatlanticism, Tiny Vessels, We Looked Like Giants etc. I also think this is the album were Death Cab perfected their sound, its not as rough, the songwritings great and its a solid all the way through. Favorite Song: A Lack Of Color MySpace.com - Death Cab for Cutie - SEATTLE, Washington - Indie - www.myspace.com/deathcabforcutie 79. pageninetynine "Document #8" http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/a.../document8.jpg pg.99/pageninetynine whatever! Are my favorite emo band though this isn't my favorite emo release (there's more to come starving-artless =o.) Anyway they build like a post-rock band, climax better than I ever have and are so intense I swear this album has its own testes. Favorite Song: In Love with an Apparition MySpace.com - Pageninetynine - Sterling, Virginia - Hardcore / Punk / Emo - www.myspace.com/pageninetynine 78. Ugly Casanova "Sharpen Your Teeth" http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/a...nyourteeth.jpg This is indie supergroup led by Isaac Brock of Modest Mouse's one and only album. It has other members, (which you can see on their myspace profile) but I only mention Brock to give you an idea on the vocals since hes one of the most unique singers/lyricists i've ever heard, musically this doesn't sound much like Modest Mouse, in fact its more rooted in Black Heart Procession or Red Red Meat than anything else. Favorite Song: Hotcha Girls MySpace.com - Ugly Casanova - - Experimental / Acoustic / Rock - www.myspace.com/uglycasanovamusic 77. Cursive "The Ugly Organ" http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/a...euglyorgan.jpg This album doesn't get much attention because it's a saddle creek release and emo boy Conor Oberst as much as I adore him basically takes away all the credibility of bands on that label with his whining. Tim Kasher proves on this album to be an incredible lyricist and extremely passionate vocalist, backed by a variety of instruments with this unique alternative rock cellocore (I can make up genres too) kind of sound The Ugly Organ is a pretty addictive release. Favorite Song: The Recluse MySpace.com - Cursive - OMAHA, NEBRASKA - Indie / Rock / Punk - www.myspace.com/cursive |
If I were to make a favorite 100 CDs, your ears would be bleeding.
But I haven't found 100 good CDs yet -_- *lesigh* |
76. Circle Takes the Square "As the Roots Undo"
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/a...erootsundo.jpg As the Roots Undo is easily one of the best screamo albums ever and most of the emo fans who bash it, if not all loved it at one point. Its an explosive release with dual male/female vocals shouting beautifully poetic lyrics over sometimes nothing to loud chaotic sections. While it's kind of the cliche release to love for a screamo fan theres a reason it's cliche because its that good. Favorite Song: Crowquill MySpace.com - circle takes the square - SAVANNAH, GEORGIA - Punk / Indie / Progressive - www.myspace.com/circletakesthesquare 75. B'ehl "Bright Eyes" http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/a...brighteyes.jpg B'ehl are a cutesy canadian twee pop band, while they're a bit too safe at times, they pulled it off simply because they don't need to experiment. They know what they're doing and know how to create great pop songs. Favorite song: I'm Sorry For Being Such A Crappy Friend no myspace =(( 74. Air "Moon Safari" http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/a...moonsafari.jpg I'm not too big on electronic music but this album is so chill and fun I can't help but love it. Does the cover of this album remind anyone else of super mario? Favorite Song: Ce Matin Là MySpace.com - Air - Paris - Electronica / Pop / Experimental - www.myspace.com/intairnet 73. Circa Survive "On Letting Go" http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/a...nlettinggo.jpg I didn't care for Juturna much, which was like smoke to me. Pretty vocals, light guitars all interweaving in a progressive manner and emotionally climaxing. Then when I finished I was kind of like "Man he sounds like a chick," and that was all that it left me with. This release shows them progressing musically, ethereal guitars, better vocals and even more beautiful lyrics. Though this release contains that smoke kind of quality to it. Except maybe its more akin to a ghost, because unlike smoke it doesn't disappear it continues to lingers on. Favorite Song: Kicking Your Crosses Down MySpace.com - Circa Survive - PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA - Other / Experimental / Indie - www.myspace.com/circasurvive |
72. Mogwai "Come on Die Young"
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/a...ondieyoung.jpg This is my favorite Mogwai album, each song drifts into the next with spare electronics drifting around and distant noises and then it's all washed away. This is the album I put on late at night when i'm hiding the fact i'm drinking and thinking in my room. Favorite Song: Waltz For Aidan MySpace.com - mogwai - Glasgow, UK - Rock / Psychedelic / Metal - www.myspace.com/mogwai 71. Frank Turner "Sleep Is For the Week" http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/a...fortheweek.jpg Frank Turner's biggest influence is Billy Bragg and it shows. Not just in his lyrical topics but in his delivery, even when the subject is more personal. While Sleep is for the Week isn't something shockingly new in folk, but it's still a quality release with songs about relationships, getting drunk, punk rock and going to hell. Favorite Song: Once We Were Anarchists MySpace.com - Frank Turner - UK - Folk / Punk / Country - www.myspace.com/frankturner 70. Seabear "The Ghost That Carried Us Away" http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/a...p100/ghost.jpg This is Icelandic indie-pop-folk band Seabear's debut, led by 23 year old Sindri Snær Sigfússon (I can't pronounce that). They create a beautiful mellow sound including, pianos, acoustic guitars, violins, gentle vocal harmonies and poetic lyrics. It came to me at the right time and holds a special Iceland shaped place in my heart. Favorite Song: I Sing I Swim MySpace.com - seabear - Reykjavik, Reykjavik - Indie / Experimental / Folk - www.myspace.com/seabear 69. Sunny Day Real Estate "The Rising Tide" http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/a...risingtide.jpg Thats right, I didn't put Diary on here. I mean it was an influential release but you could find tons of bands doing post-emo better. With the Rising Tide they'd established a more unique and cohesive sound and showed themselves to be better musicians and songwriters. They played with a more heavy indie influence then before and I can't really explain it, the release really does remind me of living in Washington because it just holds this sound that reminds me of rainy days. Favorite Song: Rain Song MySpace.com - Sunny Day Real Estate - Seattle, Washington - Indie - www.myspace.com/onedayistoppedbreathing |

I never really cared for that Death Cab album much at all after hearing Plans. But there's been so many great albums posted since my last reply: Frank Turner, Seabear, CTTS, Cursive..... all amazing.

Plans is a great album, i'm glad to see someone doesn't have some hipster clouded bias about it because its popular or major label or whatever the problem with it is, it's in my top three death cab albums easily.
