Astronautalis - This Is Our Science (2011)

This might actually be a top contender for my hip hop album of the year, or at least in my top three, which is kind of funny because it's not exclusively a hip hop album. It's about half hip hop, half indie rock and all around awesome. When Andy gets into his groove he really rides it well and with a deep passion, yet not in the same way that other emcees like Immortal Technique. His flow has really improved since Pomegranate and he really has flourished into his own unique sound. The thing that really helps him stand apart from other emcees is his ability to sing, an ability he knows and lives to flaunt as much as possible. For all the awesome hip hop songs, there's going to be a piano based song that sounds like a blend of Tom Waits and Elliott Smith, which may seem out of place, but he manages to make it work. The album features a number of very noticeable guest spots like Doomtree emcees P.O.S. and Sims on the second track and the sexy Tegan Quin on the 7th song "Contrails". This is definitely an album that you will want to check out if you're into indie hip hop, indie rock, or recognize any of the influences/ guest spots, it will not disappoint.

Yeah, I really have a strong leaning toward the post-rock/ambient facet of there music. good call on recommending Burial in that he's the one that I always refer to in exemplifying the textural element in electronica that I always seem to be chasing after. Some artist that I've gotten into lately that come close are Helios, Lights Out Asia, and definitely Loscil, who've completely won me over, but tend to be a little too ambient for what I'm looking for.

That's some great stuff! I've heard of Helios, but not the other two. For me, I think The Sight Below sit on that line of being too ambient. They have some great stuff though.

Leftfield - Leftism (1999)

I'm not sure when I acquired this album but it's an interesting piece of dub-infused electro. Probably one of the sparsest electro albums I've listened to in a while, but it redeems itself tenfold when the beat hits.

I also checked out that Arms and Sleepers album, it's immense. Definitely need to get some more like it.

well, disc 2 anyway, all the "famous" three albums (Bring it All Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited and Blonde on Blonde) are overplayed for me, so the "new" slants on some of the songs from them is refreshing, to say the least

disc 1 is less engaging, his early home recordings aren't very good and i don't like his pre-electric stuff all that much
