Swans - My Father Will Guide Me Up A Rope To The Sky

I'm on the fence about whether this is a "true Swans" album or if Gira was using the Swans name to pimp his other stuff. Even if he was doing that, it's his prerogative and I don't really care. This is a great album and when I hear it I picture them playing it live, which I saw. Seeing them play this album live was an unforgettable experience. More memorable and probably more powerful than the album itself. No speakers or headphones can go loud enough to properly represent the band's actual intensity. Gira is a motherfucking monster.

Greek Fire - If This Is The End (2012)

A surprisingly wicked example of modern pop-rock done right: they've got the punch of Vertical Horizon, the atmosphere of early U2, and the swagger of guys like .fun.

I'm listening to The World Alive - Life Cycles. Its their 2nd album and its amazing. The music is really hardcore. Its like a mix of punk, metal, and scream with clear vocals and you can hear the lyrics even when they scream.

Brutal Truth—Need to Control
Recently I've been working my way through these guys' discography, and though all of it has been decent, this album was really a pleasant surprise. On the one hand, yes, it's classic, crazy, balls to the walls grindcore, but on the other hand it's so much more. For one thing, there are sizable dashes of thrash and noise rock in the mix. More important, though, are the details. At every turn this album seems to reinvent itself with unusual sound loops, odd percussion, horns, spoken word... hell they even throw in a didgeridoo at one point. Really, if you dig loud music, and you like it with a dollop of experimentalism, give this a listen. I just wish they'd continued in this direction on subsequent albums.

This could come under "Last album you bought..." but I am also "digging" it at the moment, so whadda ya know?

Seriously getting closer to TMS and C4C for my Album of the Year.

Rick Springfield - Living In Oz (1983)

Although I've always thought Rick was fairly competent as far as power pop goes, Living In Oz was his first attempt at full blown AOR as well as a condemnation of the increasingly synth-dominated music industry...and it does what it does verrrrrrrry well.

Man is the Bastard—Mancruel
These guys are one of those bands that has hovered on fringes of my awareness for years and years so I finally decided to give them a listen. Pretty good stuff—experimental, punishing, droning, hardcore-based music that feels oddly jazzy to me.

Dead Meadow - Dead Meadow

So I've been really excited that a new Tame Impala album is coming out soon. Innerspeaker was one of those albums that I actually couldn't wait to listen to. It's rare these days that I anticipate a new album so much since I have so much easily accessible new stuff that it occupies my time. Even so, I can't wait for it and it's been putting me in the mood for the all the really good psychedelic music is coming out right now. Black Mountain, Moon Duo, the Psychic Ills...all stuff worthy of checking out. Dark Meadows is the perfect example of a band that may help me wait out the bit of time I have left for the new Tame Impala. Sabbath-inspired riffs abound, so if sludgy fuzzed out psychedelic music sounds like something you'd be into, I really recommend these guys.
