Valen Hsu Lu Yuen - Sea of Tears (aka Tear Sea)

i didn't like this much when i first got it, but after my trip, i really love it now

Mando-Pop (Female singer) - she apes Kate Bush a bit, which i find irritating, cos she ought to just stick to her own delivery style

Whenever I've had the urge to listen to Spacemen 3 in the past, I've always turned to Playing With Fire or The Perfect Prescription. They're both blissful listens, and as a consequence Sound of Confusion has found itself a little neglected... until recently. I was thinking of some covers for a radio show, and I remembered the band's killer version of Rollercoaster by 13th Floor Elevators. I suddenly found myself immersed in the rest of the album, and I found instant satisfaction in the raw, acidic riffs, repetitive trance-like structures and distorted hooks. There's something feral about the whole thing, a sharper edge to it compared to rest of the band's discography. Great listen.

You had me at "Spacemen". Downloading this album, and excited to add another excellent space rock group into my collection.

Oh man... You'll love them. Their sound has been described as minimalist psychedelia. I think there's a lot of appreciation for them round these parts.

Pay particular attention to the 17-minute live version of Rollercoaster, it drags you down the rabbit hole.

Some very addicting Pop Punk/Indie Rock. Not too much to say about it, I just really dig the songwriting. Pretty much all the songs on here are catchy as hell, but particularily the song "I Don't Believe You", which Violent and Funky posted. Really catchy chord progression, and I love the female back up vocals.

Pallbearer - Sorrow and Extinction (2012)

Following the success of bands like Ghost, Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats, and Blood Ceremony comes yet another band bringing back an old school sounding doom metal sound with a modern touch. Pallbearer are probably the heaviest out of the ones I've listed, they remind me a lot more of Cathedral or Candlemass, with a touch of stoner metal thrown in. Strangely enough they also showcase some NWOBHM influences that you don't often see in this genre, so that's pretty cool. Definitely an album I think we'll still be talking about later on towards the years end.

Awright so 90s throwback bands generally turn me off in a big way but I decided to listen to the new one by Cloud Nothings.

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-v8JwfYVVRD...-on-Memory.jpg

I listened to it and kind of cringed at some of the vocals and other parts but... I listened to it again. And then again. And again. And I will listen again soon.

This means I'm fully digging it.

This is fantastic. Just great punk, garage, indie. Whatever you want to call it, it's just great rock that gets to the point. Noisy and manly and, awesome basically.

I want to give this one another try, because the style is right up my alley and the songwriting itself is (from what i've heard from it) good, but I just can't get past those vocals. It sounds like he's trying to be as off tune as possible.

Twin Sister - Color Your Life

Highly addictive. Only 6 tracks, so it definitely leaves you wanting more. The way I would describe it is modern Velvet Underground with Nico (only this girl's voice is much more soothing and charming...Nico was kinda gruff sometimes). Plenty of awesome psychedelic moments, too. Can't wait to hear more from these guys.

Is this the one you told me I'd really hate?

It certainly reminded me of the background noises in a steel factory...

Certainly was, it's still amazing though

Feedbacker is my fave drone and Boris album. I've only heard about 8 Boris albums though (I count 11 live albums and 27 LPs).

When I had the album on vinyl there was no 'Charged GBH' on the cover. They will always be plain old GBH to me and it still sounds like walking on cracked chavs heads with jack boots. Lovely.

The BEST alternative rock. Shame their follow up wasn't as good, but it was hard to follow Future Perfect anyway

Air - Le Voyage Dans La Lune

I think Air does a great job when they have a focus. That's very clear with this album. While still not as great as some of their earlier work (it's hard to top 10,000 Hz Legend or Talkie Walkie) its DEFINITELY better than some of their later work (which just tends to drone on pointlessly while taking old ideas and trying to pass them off as new). This actually sounds fresh and despite a few boring patches (that I'm sure were just meant to fit the narrative of the film), I think they should keep heading in this direction. It also makes me want to watch the remastered film as well. I saw the original, and it's pretty creative despite being more than 100 years old...I think this soundtrack could add a new element to it.

Very good "retro" traditional doom/heavy metal album. I was very disappointed with another "retro" album similar in vein released this year: "Possession" by Christian Mistress. Very sloppy.

Listened to that album yesterday. Great. Just downloaded the Pallbearer album as well, hopefully it lives up to the hype.

Listening to Labor Days at the moment, then Oneirology, pretty tough to top.

Grimes - Visions

This album is probably my favorite so far of 2012. I can't stop listening to it. It's crazy electro pop indie, but the vocal hooks in this are AMAZING. I love this girl's high pitched voice, too.

Goofle 03-14-2012 01:14 PM

^ It's completely average in my view. The production can be nice at times, but some of the songs are terrible. Nowhere near my favourites of the year. Her voice is incredible though.

duga 03-14-2012 01:17 PM

I think there are enough highly addictive songs to put it above average at least. I haven't heard many albums this year that keep me coming back for more, so that alone bumps it to my favorite of 12 so far.

Goofle 03-14-2012 01:32 PM

I suppose that is something worth noting (how often you come back to it).

I have listened to Heems - "Nehru Jackets", Big K.R.I.T. - "4Eva N A Day", Perfume Genius - "Put Your Back N 2 It" and Young Fathers - "Tape One" more often (or have more scrobbles, which can be misleading due to amount of tracks). But I think I rate quite a lot of these albums ahead of Grimes - Visions, even if I have only played them once.

Been revisiting my Hawkwind album collection for the past while, and this gem from 1990 strikes me quite well among them on the cosmic grind scale. Opening number 'Images' in particular is the best 9 minutes of space-punk-prog. bliss I've had the pleasure of hearing as far back as I can remember. :D
