Currently digging Animals as Leaders. It ticks all the right boxes. Two 8-string guitarists - what"s not to like?

Joanna Newsom Ys I'm really discovering her brilliance so late. She really is extraordinary. I should have given her more time as I was growing up and these albums were coming out. |
Took me a while too, a real grower.

Been on a new wave post punk bash last night with a close friend and trough simple - next yt recommendations I stumbled on Grauzone - Die Sunrase Tapes. Very ahead of it's time. Founded in 1980, disbanded in 1982, from Bern, Switzerland.
There is a song "Ich Lieb Sie" which has that 4/4 rhytm with synthetic drums characteristic for techno and arguably said - only real contemporaries from that time were f*in Kraftwerk... |
A song titled "Hinter Den Bergen" is like Radiohead in all its synth colors and harmonies - but from 1980-82. Another one tittled "Kalte Kriecht" is in its being - something like abstract electro with a new wave post punk drum beat. So this is it for describing the album; highly recommend if you're familiar with any of genres/styles. I'm thrilled and fascinated by this music.

this is fun as hell

Suishou No Fune - Where the Spirits Are Really gorgeous yet chaotic atmosphere. Better than most Fushitsusha records |
fun post-punkish music

Storm & Stress- Storm & Stress Not just digging but a new member among my all time favourite albums. Kevin Shea with members of Don Caballero on some disjointed improvisational post-hardcore that isn't atonal for atonality's sake, but because it's what their an organic performance demands. |
Sharon Van Etten - "Are We There" and "Tramp"
Killing Joke - "Killing Joke" and "Outside The Gate" |

Great chamber folkcore. The arrangements are truly captivating and amazingly deft

Utah Phillips - We Have Fed You All a Thousand Years
https://i.imgur.com/B6OS8Zw.jpg?1 This might just be my new fav live album ever. Utah Phillips was a folk singer and union organizer for the IWW (Industrial Workers of the World) and this album is mostly IWW union singalongs that he shares with the crowd who are either huge folk fans or diehard union folk. Simple lyrics but full of power, humanity, and humor and Utah Phillips delivers them like a man who only cares that he's lived a life of compassion and honor and also dad jokes. I honestly thought it was super short but no it's almost an hour though it's an hour of food for the soul in a time of scarcity and no meal goes quicker than the first after a short walk in moderate heat (I'm fat). "Solidarity Forever" is god tier agitationcore. |

The Weather Station - Ignorance
Pretty darn cool. Thank goodness. This year was looking quite bleak as far as new releases. |
I see some hidden gems here. Epic!

https://i.ibb.co/j8nkqk7/TSFSE.jpg The Sure Fire Soul Ensemble - The Sure Fire Soul Ensemble (2015) The debut album from 'The Sure Fire Soul Ensemble' out of San Diego, California. Instrumental soul/funk with organ featuring prominently in the mix. Great tunes from beginning to end. 10/10 |
Another great album of instrumental tunes where organ features prominently in the mix. This is their debut (and only) album. Seems like they must've disbanded sometime after their debut album, as there's nothing else they released afterwards. A shame, since this is such a solid debut.
10/10 |
^this is chill af, Meters vibes

this is weird and awesome

Squid - Bright Green Field I think this may be the first 10/10 album for me to come out in...I don't know, over a decade probably. This thing is ****ing spectacular. Somehow they've made post-punk feel fresh and new in the year 2021 while sprinkling in some jazz and ambient influences. So many absolute banger tracks, and "Narrator" might be the greatest song of all-time I don't even know man I'm riding the hype right now but this is seriously a god tier album |
oh awesome, a new Squid album

Those young UK experimental rock/post punk bands are the hot thang right now.

Mark IV - Lånt tid
by Sorten Muld A nice comeback album, it is a bit different from their other albums from the Mark II (1997), III (2000) and Jord·Luft·Ild·Vand (2002). I liked most of the songs from the new album, some more some less. There are more instruments, oriental sound. I still like their older sound more. But I am still happy that they returned with a new album this year. Hillelil The first song from the album |

Black Midi Cavalcade I expected this to be good. It is good. These guys will be staples in this scene for however long they desire. Morgan Simpson is the best young drummer in the world as far as I'm concerned. He's a monster on this. Greep really stretches his vocal range and it's glorious. The mixing is great albeit I think the compression on Youtube and Spotify sucks balls. I'll see how the record sounds. Wonderful record. Already looking forward to the next one. |
^I really want to hear the Taylor Swift cover bonus track

They're all Speedy Wunderground artists but they're so different that it doesn't really make sense to compare them to me. Squid=black midi>Black Country, New Road fwiw |
Agreed.
BCNR aren't particularly great. Okay at best and kinda sucky at worst. BM and Squid are both top tier. |
I bought a hard copy of BCNR because I was able to get it cheap from the distro at the shop but it's my least favorite of the three. Black Midi is legit. I think they have fully earned their hype in more than one way and this second album just goes to show their first wasn't a fluke.
You don't get to have a drummer like Morgan Simpson or a unique frontman like Georgie Greep without doing a bunch of things right. Also, hello Grindy. Please have my babies. |
Which albums would you guys recommend here?
