The only thing i had heard from this band was that awful single "Mountains" that was in the charts a few years ago and dismissed them as a poor pop band. But then I got recommend this album from a friend and it really knocked my socks off.

'Mountains' is indeed a terrible song. Vertigo Of Bliss is a great album though, they were really starting to find their sound on that album. Get Infinity Land next and prepare to be blown away.

Glad to see you're enjoying it. Catherine Wheel, The Cure (Disintegration era) and The Verve's early material might appeal to you, and if you'd like the same idea but with a bit of noise thrown into the mix, Bailter Space is a good choice.



Faust - Faust IV

I'll admit that I knew I was going to absolutely adore this album seconds into "Krautrock" when I realized I was in for an elongated drone session. I couldn't stop smiling the first time I heard it, as I'm a sucker for that kind of thing done right.

Needless to say, a twelve-minute instrumental wouldn't be that impressive on the album if it wasn't contrasted by a number of much more simplistically-structured pieces. Though the structure becomes much more tangible and relatable, the music does not; "The Sad Skinhead" still contains awesome marimba-like passages (I need to learn the names of these instruments individually as picking them out annoys me). "Jennifer"'s echoing bassline is tantalizing, and the vocals are beautiful in the song. When the slow washes of white noise in the background begin to take over some 4.5 minutes in, it feels seamless, as if they've introduced a completely new piece of music with no obstruction. "Picnic On A Frozen River, Deuxieme Tableux"'s vocal lines are also awesome, with that whole LOTS OF NAKED GERMANS! thing going on and whatnot, and its ending is so absolutely addictive that I almost become disappointed when it finally ends. Every other song on here is either as good as the aforementioned or nearly there.

Essentially, here we have the best face of experimental music - the face that isn't completely oblivious to structure, but still has the will to get out there and explore the possibilities.

Got a few more to add... Don't forget Telescopes! They're often noisier and harsher than most of the other shoegaze bands but easily as good. Solar Coaster mixed punk and shoegaze in a ridiculously enjoyable way. And if you haven't heard them, Medicine are good as well. Don't miss some of the other newer bands too like Candy Claws and A Sunny Day in Glasgow.

When Loathsome Pete told me this was an avant-garde metal album, I was hoping for something more like Kayo Dot. Well, it goes to say that this isn't Kayo Dot, but it's equally good. It has an undeniably Science-fiction-esque vibe to it, something I dig. The entire space-related lyrics thing also caught my attention, as I absolutely love astronomical things, and the use of synthesizers on here sounds pretty awesome and is quite fitting for the music.
