Half Man Half Biscuit - Peel Sessions
One of Britain's finest. I've been listening to this virtually non-stop for the last couple of days.

I forgot how much fun this album was and just think- Clint Mansell is now a film composer par excellence!

My brother had that album when I was a kid and I barely remember what it sounds like, but I bought Cure for Sanity last year and I really like that.

It's a rough trade inspired bonanza!

Revisting this and it's just as cute and charming as i remember. And badass. Some of the guitar lines and basslines are just inspired, and they get even more points for having a singer who looks like a librarian.

Just chilled out and gorgeous, with that slight blues feel to it and the dark, probably stoned, singer which keeps it far away enough from being too MOR to me. This will be my sleepy time album for the next week.

Been on my list for yonks. Pretty weird. Pretty great too.

Funky Jazz with Afro-beat influences and a crisp experimental tinge, excellent.

Others too, but that'll come later in another format.

Augustus Pablo - King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown (1976)

For those not in the know, King Tubby was a revolutionary producer and engineer who 'invented' dub music and the remix, and was the first of his kind to gain fame and respect on a par with recording artists (at least in Jamaica).

Augustus Pablo was another first, the first melodica instrumentalist to record an album. 'Rockers' was the name of his label, named after his brother's soundsystem.

So what you have here is Pablo banging out his tunes, playing all the keys, and overseeing production, before letting Tubby loose at the mixing stage doing what he did best - using the mixing desk as an instrument to earth-shaking effect. Loping basslines are brought to the fore, vocal snippets are phased in and out, elements are doused in reverb and other effects employed to create that atmosphere... it's saturated and heavy but lighter than air at the same time.

^^^^

Glad you are liking it sir! Dub is just so good when you are in the mood for it. Get yourself some modern dub with 10ft Ganja Plant-damn good stuff.

I only got that one after the JH-approved 'This Is Augustus Pablo' which is brilliant in different ways, there seems to be more Pablo in that one and less of Tubby's tinkerings.

Will make my way to 10ft deffo. Oh and I just got a 'Heavyweight Dub Champion' by Scientist :D He is like the continuation of Tubby in a way, really exciting to listen to.
