Circa Survive - Juturna

Circa Survive have always been my "chill" music amongst other bands, but I am really enjoying listening to all their albums again. I've always liked the vocalist as well, he's one of those where you can listen to the album and the vocals allow the album to flow so smoothly and nicely.

Sonny Sharrock, Ask The Ages. Sharrock was a jazz guitarist who sounds like he may be the evil, jazz-musician twin of Carlos Santana. Same tone, same general sound, just free jazz. He has a tendency to bring up earlier phrases throughout the album, and seems to working off a particular theme, though I couldn't tell you what the theme is. Anyway, good stuff. Much less abrasive that I assumed it would be. If you enjoy jazz and/or excellent guitarists, I suggest checking this album out!

I know I'm a little behind the times on this one, but I have recently begun to really enjoy this album a lot, so here it is. A supergroup of sorts, Damon Albarn leads Paul Simonon of the Clash, Simon Tong of the Verve, and Tony Allen, a renowned Afrobeat drummer. Danger Mouse produces. Most of the songs are off-kilter, and give off the sound of a group of children playing that may try to murder each other at any moment. Albarn is great on piano and vocals, and of course, Simonon brings this great dubby bass, which just makes everything better. If it was messed with a bit, it could be a post-punk band. My only disappointment is that with a drummer like Tony Allen, I would expect crazy beats all over the place, and it's all pretty standard indie rock/reggae drumming. I mean, sure it's good, but it's not mind-blowing. Ah well. Overall, a great album.

Corb Lund - Cabin Fever (2012)

This is really one of the few country albums I've actually gotten this year, and I'm okay with that because quality over quantity. This is one of his darker albums, although you might not be able to tell from the music, because he hides the darkness of his lyrics behind this veneer of upbeat country music. I mean the opening track "Getting Down On the Mountain" is basically a list telling you how useless you would be if civilization were to fall. From there the tone of the album changes somewhat erratically to songs about feeling torn between your love of the vast country and your love for a companion who doesn't share your passion, which seems to be becoming a standard theme with Corb. He still has his humour with songs like "Bible on the Dash", "The Gothiest Girl I Can", and "Cows Around", and it definitely creates a nice juxtaposition when songs like "September" or "One Left In The Chamber" come on and kill whatever levity the previous songs created. All in all it's definitely not as good as his 2007 album Horse Soldier, Horse Soldier that I just absolutely fell in love with, but it's as good as his last one and sounds different, while still being the same.

Unwound - Repetition

Probably the second best album in their discography (with Leaves Turn Inside You being my favourite) and I just love the mix of post-hardcore sensibilities without the annoying vocals.

Tell you what, New Plastic Ideas gives both Repetition and Leaves Turn Inside You a run for their money, that album has seriously stung me. They didn't release a bad album, they're all great. Great band.

I've had Leaves Turn Inside You on my hard drive for a long time. Thanks for reminding me to hear it, it has been excellent so far.
