Zu - The Way of the Animal Powers

This is one of Zu's albums that I always sort of looked over and listen to sparingly. Today I was listening to it while I was doing a project where I had to watch the sunset and then the golden hour, and it blew me away. It very well could have been the result of staring at the sun for around fifteen minutes, but it probably isn't (I had sunglasses).

The album consists of the regular drums, bass, and saxophone, but also incorporates cello and vocals on one track. It's incredibly layered, which is something that I didn't notice on my initial listens of the album. Each of the bassy instruments (drums included) all combine within polyrhythms that are a bit repetitive on most songs, and the outcome is good on the ears.

Then again, it is Zu. How could I ever say anything bad about them?

Parquet Courts - Light Up Gold (2012)
A new discovery this week via our local indie station, KEXP. I was commuting to work yesterday and heard the song "Borrowed Time" which sounded like a 70s punk throwback like The Clash or something (though I'm really not a big Clash fan). I streamed the album after getting to work and enjoyed the mixture of 70s, 80s and 90s punk and indie rock. I heard slight moments of Pavement and Meat Puppets in there but I feel the overall vibe is more 80s. Great punk album!

No problemo

I gave that Parquet Courts album a listen last week as well. I got a bit of a Guided By Voices and Pavement vibe off it only with more punk attitude thrown into the mix. It's not entirely consistent but there's some nice tunes on it, especially this:

This and the rest of Wilderness' albums are really appealing to me lately.

Hi,

I like Nas and Damian's album from 2010: Distant Relatives. It broached on some good issues/topics. It was quite motivational and the blend of the two artists worked to their advantage. Lyrically it was very down to earth and at times educational (in a good way).

I think most people could find something to enjoy in this album.

I absolutely love that feeling. You know... when you discover the brilliance of an album that you have known about for a while. It's like a revelation or an epiphany. I actually went through the same thing yesterday with The Residents album, Not Available. I, like you with Zu, have always enjoyed the Residents, but for some reason I had never enjoyed Not Available... until I played it yesterday driving to college (30 minute drive). Something just clicked, and I got really into the album.

For some reason it almost always happens when I'm doing some sort of monotonous task, such as: cleaning, driving, studying, or anything else along those lines.
