WE ARE KNUCKLE DRAGGER - THE DRONE (2013)
Absolutely brilliant, savage, aggressive and demanding noise-rock with a mixture of mathy hardcore and massive, bouncing riffs. Not a particularly easy listen but an enjoyable one. I picked it up at a gig of theirs a few weeks back, played it once, thought it was decent, then recently played it again and have been obsessing over it ever since. Cracking local band that have gigged and then gone on to support Meshuggah and Dillinger Escape Plan, play Reading and Leeds festivals, and work with Steve Albini and Ross Robinson. Robinson produced this one.




NARROW LANDS - POPULAR MUSIC THAT WILL LIVE FOREVER (2013)
Debut album from an Australian noise-rock band. From Sydney, this album is also absolutely brilliant. It offers up some of the same qualities as the Knuckle Dragger album in that its chaotic in its approach to being noisy as all hell, with some slow, droning riffs in places, at times some faster moments verging on hardcore, and a whole hell of a lot of feedback.

It was recorded in a shed, and it sounds like it. This is not a criticism. It's a quartet playing rock and roll, stripped back and very ****ing loud. Sometimes theres not much need for anything else. There was also, interestingly, a really confusing, strange sound that I couldnt isolate or identify when listening to it. So I googled it:

“We leaned a baritone guitar up against the (slightly detuned and old) piano, plugged the guitar through as many pedals as possible so that when you played the piano it reverberated through the guitar and made this big impressive rumbling sound".

Wonderful stuff.

Obviously agree tho. Panopticon is quickly becoming one of my favorite current black metal bands. I think I like Collapse a little more than Kentucky but both are really great.

And well ive been diggin this for a while now

That's a fantastic album, also one of my favourites of the decade. So far billy woods is a contender for a repeat winner of my album of the year decision with his most recent release "Dour Candy" produced entirely (which is unique for woods, usually he has a lot of producers) by Blockhead. woods has definitely become one of my top 5 favourite emcees. Since he's so wordplay oriented and reference heavy I keep finding new things in his lyrics and I think that's why I like him so much: because he is so rewarding to listen to.

I've been craving some really good drums lately, so a couple of weeks ago I threw on Peter Brotzmann's "Machine Gun" and have not stopped listening. This is almost one of those albums where everybody does a fantastic job on the record and it's easier to just enjoy the album for how brilliant it is than to pick out my favourite element of it. Some albums of that qualification include Mahavishnu Orchestra's Birds of Fire, Eric Dolphy's Out to Lunch!, and Etron Fou Leloublan's Batelages among many others. That being said, the drums on this record especially kick some downright ass when Han Bennink and Sven-Ake Johansson (the former being infinitely superior to the latter) combine their efforts to add to this cacophonous mess. I guess that I say this because while I listen to different parts intently with each listen, I find myself focusing in on the drums more often as they're so damn incredible and unique (to a degree). The bassists and saxophonists also work well within their collective effort, with Brotzmann and Evan Parker being the shining stars of the horn section (Williem Breuker falls short only because he doesn't reach the free jazzily enlightened state of the other saxophonists). Fred Van Hove also plays a mad, fitting, and original piano niche in the album that really shines during the solos.



Please, listen to this record or regret putting it off for so long like I did.

Yep Dour Candy is up there for hip hop albums of the year as well. But I think i like History more, right now anyways.



This album is making me feel things. Im having this serious sense of nostalgia listening to this and I dont know why (never heard of these guys until today). Like wow im almost in tears wtf. Music is p cool eh?

Haven't listened to this album in so many years aye it really is a blast from the past. I used to listen to this sheet constantly when I was in middle school and then lost touch with it for a very long time. Definitely not as good as their first two albums, but it's a really solid cover album!
