Best of 2007

Standout songs of the year are?

For Me:

Rihanna- Umbrella/ Don't Stop The Music
Justin Timberlake- Sexy Back
Christina A- Ain't No other Man Remix
Nelly Furtado- Maneater

And Any Remix by Electro Rockerz

What is a good shop in Sydney to buy Imports other than HMV Pitt Street?

Frances 06-21-2007 08:33 PM

Are there no JB's in Sydney? (I'm from Melbourne)

Edit: There is! 500 George street. (city)

Blain 06-22-2007 02:07 AM

Frances is Aussie?

And yeah, in the city its near an Electronics Boutique.

Frances 06-22-2007 02:20 AM

Yup!

Skid Mark 06-22-2007 03:11 AM

Since when is SexyBack 2007 song?

Alexander the Grape 06-24-2007 05:45 PM

More importantly, since when is Sexy Back a standout song?

Not sure about specific songs, but there are a ton of new records from great bands being released this year:

The Fall of Troy- Manipulator
HORSE the Band- A Natural Death
The Number Twelve Looks Like You- Mongrel
Between the Buried and Me- Colors
Bad Religion- New Maps of Hell

And I heard the new Dillinger Escape Plan record is supposed to be out sometime this fall.

Too bad all of the cds I've heard so far are good, but can't compare to past releases from the bands.

MHDTV 06-24-2007 11:18 PM

Yah, Apple has pretty terrible taste. :p: :band: No offense of course.

Divide and Fall Apart 06-25-2007 03:33 AM

Um for me, pretty much anything from biffy clyro has been quite exciting.

Fightstar's free download 99(you and I).

The new stuff from Ash sounds good as well.

Jonz 06-25-2007 04:01 AM

Hmm, so far it'd be out of:

The Shins - Phantom Limb and Turn On Me
The Twilight Sad - Walking For Two Hours
Travis - Battleships and My Eyes

Frances 06-25-2007 04:10 AM

The best 3 albums out this year so far for Frances.

Tori Amos - American Girl Posse
Nine Inch Nails - Year Zero
The White Stripes - Icky Thump

chumb 06-25-2007 09:15 AM

Grinderman is really the only stand-out thing I've heard so far this year. There were a couple other new releases that caught my eye but that I didn't follow up (Throbbing Gristle maybe?) so if anyone has any recommendations I'd be happy to take them.

TheBig3 06-25-2007 09:55 AM

If the second half is like the first, we'll be doing great.

Modest mouse was great
White Stripes were great
QotSA came out with 2 or 3 decent songs
I think Beale Street to Oblivion came out this year and that was solid

Just got that one of Saturday. From the reviews I had read I was expecting a faster, more aggressive album, but it does seem pretty good. It may take a while for me to fully digest by that's how I am with Nick Cave in general. He's one of my favorite musicians but I don't generally fall in love with his albums on the first listen.

A couple other strong 2007 releases are:

Jesu—"Conqueror"
The Book of Knots—"Traineater"
Tin Hat—"The Sad Machinery of Spring"
Panda Bear—"Person Pitch"

ilmaestro13 06-26-2007 10:32 AM

Well I'm pretty behind this year, I liked Modest Mouse and Stephen Marley, I'm considering getting NIN or the White Stripes

joyboyo53 06-26-2007 10:39 AM

of montreal - hissing fauna are you the destroyer
modest mouse - we were dead before the ship even sank
tokyo police club - a lesson in crime (believe it was 2007)

many more.. these just popped into my head

anti45 06-26-2007 10:50 AM

4 winds - Bright Eyes
The Shins Phantom Limb
+44- When your heart stops beating
Bad Religion

joyboyo53 06-26-2007 10:59 AM

is 4 winds a track from the casadaga album?

sleepy jack 06-26-2007 02:28 PM

It was an EP too with like, three good songs on it. It was better than the actual album.

Imonlydancing 06-26-2007 04:01 PM

right, the album this year that i am pretty much digging would have to be...
modest mouse - we were dead before the ship even sank.

saw them last month.
the energy in the room was amazing.
and jonny marr ! yes yesss.

Frances 06-26-2007 04:58 PM

and Volta - Bjork. How did I forget that one?

sleepy jack 06-26-2007 05:13 PM

My favorites so far this year.

Elliott Smith "New Moon"
Patrick Wolf "The Magic Position"
Okkervil River "The Stage Names"
Explosions in the Sky "All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone"
Avril Lavigne "The Best Damn Thing"
Do Make Say Think "You, You're a History in Rust"
65daysofstatic "The Destruction of Small Ideas"
Of Montreal "Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?"
Deerhoof "Friend Opportunity"
Arcade Fire "Neon Bible"
Wilco "Sky Blue Sky"
The Shins "Wincing the Night Away"
New Pornographers "Challengers"
Rufus Wainwright "Release the Stars"
Circa Survive "On Letting Go"

And then theres been several disappointing releases, fall of troy, bright eyes etc. Looking forward to Rilo Kiley's new album and A Silver Mt. Zion's.

Piss Me Off 06-27-2007 04:26 AM

Urban Hat€monger ? 06-27-2007 11:53 AM

Grinderman - S/T
Rufus Wainright - Release The Stars
Von Südenfed - Tromatic Reflexxions
Adult - Why Bother?
White Stripes - Icky Thump
Plan B - Paint It Blacker
Deerhunter - Cryptograms
The Fall - Reformation Post TLC
Los Campesinos - Sticking Fingers Into Sockets

Janszoon 06-30-2007 11:59 PM

Four more kick-ass new albums:

Tomahawk—"Anonymous" American Indian chants mixed with jagged, rough-hewn rock 'n roll. In anyone else's hands besides Mike Patton's a concept like this could've been really cheesy, but this isn't. At all. It's really quite amazing and haunting.

Pig Destroyer—"Phantom Limb" If you liked the insane grind of "Terrifyer" you will dig this album. Certainly not everyone's cup of tea but if you like hyper-aggressive music in general or grindcore in particular you will love it.

Cornelius—"Sensuous" Imagine if muzak was done in a creative and exciting way. Like it's predecessor "Point" this album pulls off the amazing trick of turning the epitome of bland, lame music into something exciting and new. Great music to chill out to. Fantastic album.

Amon Tobin—"Foley Room" The guy who pushed trip-hop to it's outer limits has now pushed into into the unknown. Instead of sampling existing songs, Amon Tobin is now creating his own live samples and building amazing noir-ish sound collages out of them. This album, while certainly in line with his previous work, has an amazing raw edge to it that is clearly a product of the new sampling technique. Highly recommended.
